State Senator accused of breaking into ex-gf's house hitting her stomach and stealing her phone

MARRERO, La. -- State Sen. Derrick Shepherd was arrested Saturday on charges of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, theft and simple battery.

The Jefferson Parish Criminal Lockup confirmed the senator was arrested at his home in Marrero and charged.

Shepherd is also under federal investigation for money laundering.

Deputies said they were called to the home of 29-year-old Thaise Ashford just before 3 a.m. Saturday.

Ashford is an ex-girlfriend of Shepherd's. She claimed that after repeated calls from the senator, he forced his way into her home and an argument ensued where Shepherd allegedly hit her in the stomach. He's also accused of stealing Ashford's cell phone and $100.
