Did anyone, like me, at one time find Dennis Miller funny?
I was flipping thru channels today and stopped on the O'Reilly Factor (I know, I'm in need of a cleansing!!!), and there was Dennis Miller, cracking lame-ass political jokes. Clearly, sucking up to the right wing not only robs you of your soul, but also of your sense of humor.
I regret ever laughing at one of the prick's jokes.

7. I did.
I remember watching his stand up acts, and thinking how closely the audience had to listen to his tirades, until a few got it and laughed, and then the rest joined in. I could never understand how so many, who didn't seem to get half of what he said, liked him.

I still scratch my head over his stint with the NFL. Talk about a mismatch! He'd start waxing Dickensian over a play and his fellow announcer would just sit there with a frozen smile on his face.

8. He was okay on Weekend Update
But he was never in any skits....which seemed strange.

His foray into MNF was pathetic. I think he drew the ire of the ususal "SEE....THE MEDIA IS LIBERAL!!" types even though he wasn't a liberal, and decided to play ball by "switching parties" after that.

9. Sure, but he was broken by 9/11.
His fear got the best of him.

It happened to more than a few people. Big trauma sometimes does that to people.

I honestly could have forgiven him that, but then greed and vanity took over and he threw himself off the cliff completely.

Too bad. He was a talented guy.

15. I doubt very much he was "broken"
IMHO, he saw public opinion had abruptly swayed rightward, and being an unprincipled hack, he turned his coat inside out rather than stand up for anything.

The change was so dramatic and quick that I'm inclined to believe differently.

10. His HBO show ... once

On his HBO show, when his guest was Robin Williams, I though the show was hilarious. It was one of the early shows, so I continued to watch, thinking something good might come of this. But, it never did. It got worse and worse, and the ranting was plain old by ... oh, the fourth or fifth time he did it.

After that ... nada.

12. I did. I like smart humor. But when he flipped to the dark side, I threw out all of his books,
tapes, etc. and thought "Fuck him; he's dead to me."

Now when I want smart humor, I listen to Steven Wright or (R.I.P.) George Carlin.

13. Never, but it was unfair.
I held him up against Lenny Bruce, Dick Gregory, George Carlin. Miller was fucked up funny like Gallagher, I had to be fucked up for it to be funny. Call it Reagan era funny.

Now I thoroughly enjoy him only in cartoon form: Imaginary Gary, from Fairly Oddparents. (Yes, my TV watching is quite Nickelodeon intensive, thanks to MG Jr.) I don't know who does the voice, but I just crack up when he says, "Not kyewl, boo boo!" It occurs to me I am now laughing AT him, however!

22. Yes and still do.
Many of his "Rants" are well thought out and intellectually funny. So what if he's become a republican after 9/11?

To quote the quy in his great Political Correctness Rant...

"You know something, there's nothing wrong with a culture where everybody has a different idea of what's humorous. The last time I can remember an entire nation being on the same page, it was Germany in the late thirties and it didn't really turn out that funny. Remember: In its time and place, what Hitler said was considered politically correct; and it's that blind adherence to what is situationally palatable that is truly dangerous. We should question it all. Poke fun at it all. Piss off on it all. Rail against it all.

And most important, for chrissakes, laugh at it all. Because the only thing separating holy writ from complete bullshit is your perspective. It's your only weapon. Keep the safety off, don't take yourself too seriously, and remember that at the end of the day, this is just an ant farm with beepers, and it takes zero politically correct assholes to screw in a light bulb, because they are perpetually in the fucking dark."
