Walmart won't cash it's own money orders!
I sent my sister a Walmart money order and two different Walmart stores refused to cash it. Unbelievable. They refuse to cash the very money orders they issue themselves.

Surely, there has to be a law against this?

1. There has to be more to this story...I know people who cash them all the time.
(at WM)...
Very strange.

2. I don't know about WalMart
but I do know that convenience stores don't cash theirs. That isn't uncommon with money orders.

33. I'm sure the paperwork
is to ensure that what happened to your sister doesn't happen. Seems like it would have been less of a hassle to get it through USPS. They are the safest money orders out there.

I am always shocked when people are shocked that they get crappy service at Wal-mart.

6. $600
I called one of the stores and finally got the manager on the phone and told him I didn't know the state or federal agency that governed money orders, but I was going to find out who did and Walmart would be in a world of trouble for refusing to cash a negotiable instrument that they, themselves, issue.

My sister went right back to the store and they cashed her money order.

You'll be filling out all kinds of paperwork on it. Ain't that Patriot Act great?

If you buy over $500 in one day, you have to fill out the paperwork.

I went there. This was my experience there. I wouldn't have bothered to go to WALMART if I could have purchased the money order from the post office without a hassle. I was even willing to fill out the stupid paperwork, if they could have FOUND it.

29. Whatever, dude. I could not care less what you believe.
But you need to ask yourself why I would lie about something so inconsequential. If I'm not going to take the time to wait for the idiots at the postal service to dig up their stupid paperwork in order to buy a money order for over $500, then I'm not going to waste my time digging into their website, which might or might not, tell someone that they have to fill out paperwork for money orders over $500. Just because they have a website doesn't mean they're going to spell out everything for you on it.

Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 09:05 PM by Th1onein
Just my experience. Maybe I look like a terrorist or something?

Oh, and by the way? When I told them fine, I would fill out the extra forms, then they couldn't FIND the extra forms!

I told them to just forget it, I'd go to Walmart. Yeah, right. We all see where THAT got me.

11. Be thankful your sister didn't get the 'special' treatment from Walmart
Walmart Humiliates Houston College Student, Then Bills Her For It

As seen in the past, shopping at Wal-Mart can on rare occasion be a scary proposition, but the last thing we'd expect is to get screwed by the discount retailer itself.

Such was the fate that befell Texas Southern University student Nitra Gipson, who made the noble decision to sell her car in order to pay for her final two terms at school. Having been paid with perfectly valid Wal-Mart money orders ("good as cash", according to the company), Gipson went over to her neighborhood big box store and attempted to convert the checks into legal tender.

The store manager, suspicions raised due to the large amount of currency being converted, called shenanigans and contacted the police. Gipson attempted in vain to prove that the money orders were authentic; the implacable manager refused to listen and, in an absurdly depressing turn of events, Gipson was arrested and slapped with a felony forgery charge.

18. There are a lot, a lot (a lot)
of money order scams, particularly with Wal-Mart MOs as of late. People being sent multiple MOs for large sums of money that appear legit (usually old MOs that had been cashed in earlier). Depending on the store, some will cash them if they look real enough, vast majority call it in to make sure it is in good standing, but that is only reliable for reused MOs. I've heard stories of people who have fallen on hard financial times, then they get 4 $900 Walmart MOs in the mail, and (considering it a blessing) attempt to cash it, only to be arrested for fraud.

If you get a money order from anywhere for over $300, you should probably send a copy of the receipt as well. Just to protect yourself, and the person you're paying.

21. Very good answer
It wouldn't shock me to learn that anyone would refuse to take a money order if it appears fraudulent.
I can imagine WalMart getting stung by people who reason that WM would surely accept any and all scrip
they wrote themselves, so why not counterfeit them?

The best way to go is with USPS money orders. Rock solid.

24. You know, it seems to me.....
that if you SELL a goddamned negotiable instrument, you ought to be willing to CASH the same goddamned negotiable instrument. In other words, if you make money off of something, you take responsiblity for making that money, as well.

It surprises me, the people here who are willing to give poor little Walmart a break, for not cashing the very negotiable instruments it, itself, sells.

In the end, after I talked to the manager of the store, all they ended up doing was calling a number and verifying that the money order was good. Simple as that, but they're too fucking greedy to do that, most of the time, unless someone like me lights a fire under their sorry asses.

Sounds like someone there was lazy and didn't verify it, which is bad business.

30. You hit the nail on the head.
When she went BACK to the store (after I called the manager) to cash the money order, all they did was call a numer to verify that the money order was good. I think it's either a policy at the Walmart stores down in Galveston County, Texas, not to honor their own money orders, or the store employees are too lazy to call that number and hold long enough to get the info they need to cash them. Either way, it's bullshit.

Anyway, I think they'll cash HER money orders from now on. That manager will be a long time forgetting our conversation.

22. Yeah, right. That'd be really stupid.
Send them a copy of my receipt, so that if the money order gets lost in the mail, I can't even get my money back for it. Uh huh. Why not just cut out the middle man and send CASH?

31. Never, never, EVER send cash.
I work for USPS. We use high-speed, automated equipment to sort letters. This equipment occasionally jams, and envelopes have been known- daily- to maul certain letters (no real criteria here- it's just the nature of the beast).

It sounds more frequent than it is; when you consider the sheer volume of mail we handle, you can be reasonably certain your letter will get there in one piece. However, it happens often enough that sending cash is a bad idea.

34. Went to buy a money order at the post office a few weeks ago,
and the clerk said I need to bring debit card next time instead of cash, and grumbled something about it being detrimental to the post office when people use cash. Bizarre. Never had that happen before or since. I don't even have a debit card.
