Airmen list 13 changes they want Moseley’s replacement to make

We asked Air Force Times readers what the next chief of staff’s top priorities should be.

And you gave us an earful.

Dozens of airmen chimed in on our online forums with their ideas of what Gen. Norton Schwartz — if confirmed as the next chief — should do to get the Air Force back on track.

SNIP

3. Stop trading manpower for hardware. snip Or as one airman said about our wars in the Middle East: “I do not need an F-22 to kill a guy riding a donkey.”

4. Promote leaders, not yes-men. snip

6. Accept criticism — internal and external. snip Readers’ advice to the next Air Force boss: Get over it and listen. snip

9. Make the service less corporate, more military. snip “The military is not, nor will ever be, a corporation or for-profit entity.”

12. Put nuclear weapons under a single chain of command. snip

13. Keep maintenance out of flying squadrons.
Gen. T. Michael Moseley, the outgoing chief of staff, introduced a plan to move combat aircraft maintainers into flying squadrons.

Bad idea, our readers said.

“Quit trying to convince everyone that because a guy has pilot’s wings ... somehow he has the prerequisite knowledge to manage or lead other career fields,” a reader said. “Let ... maintenance officers command maintenance.” snip

1. If that doesn't tell you that career line officers
are more interested in furthering their career than doing their job nothing ever will. I've had the argument more than a few times that our military has been corrupted by politics and a careerist attitude. There are very few line officers that will take a hit to stand for what is right.

4. All of this crap is reflected in the survey, and add that to the mess
going on at the AF Academy, with the strident fundamentalism and proselytization. Women cadets are more likely to be raped there by a fellow cadet than at the other service academies combined, from what I've heard.

My SO has been saying for years now that the AF should just be shut down.

5. "From what I've heard..."
Have you ever considered thinking for yourself? Research?

"My SO has been saying for years..." For sure, pay attention, it must be the gospel.

Commonsense is very uncommon.

8. This issue hasn't been that important for me personally.
My husband, coming from a military family, has been paying more attention to it and reads the Military Times several times a week, and I tend to believe what he tells me since I've been married to him for over 15 years. I posted the story because I thought others on DU might appreciate it and know more about the background than I know.

Save your snark for someone who gives a rat's ass. I research plenty of other topics that are of more vital concern to me.
