8. I think one reason they don't use common names is because
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 01:38 PM by kgfnally
they don't want the use of the names among people to drop off.

I haven't met a "Betsy", for example, in many, many years, and those few were born prior to hurricane Betsy.

Same for Andrew.

I can't see anyone naming their girl "Katrina" for several years, for obvious reasons.

Seriously, though, I like seeing the lists--they do come up with some uncommon names, that's for sure. Odette? Paloma? Wilfred?

11. A couple of reasons the names seem unusual
1. They can't reuse a name from one year to the next, as it could cause confusion.

2. Names that were given to storms that turned out to be especially destructive get "retired".

20. they have tried to diversify
remember once all the storms were just named after women...

if there was a name you wanted to see, feel free to suggest it to NOAA...they take open suggestions from the public (but iirc, all the hurricane names are set for the next 8-10 years)

that I assume the naming group is desperate for new names, especially at the beginning of the alphabet.

26. I am not sure I understand the issue.
Do we really need an international weather organization to pick names that reinforce American cultural trends and marginalize other cultures?

28. Where are the common "non-American" names
Jose, Maria, Alicia, Elena,Miguel, Roberto, come to mind..

Hurricanes (Caribbean/Gulf/Atlantic) affect English & Spanish speaking places..and from what I've seen over the years, the names are mostly "odd"...in ANY language :)

If the storm is really nasty, they retire the name.
