Fitzgerald's "Folly" (Krauthammer to the rescue)
Fitzgerald's Folly
A Textbook Case for a Speedy Pardon

By Charles Krauthammer
Friday, March 9, 2007; Page A21
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/08/AR2007030801499.html

There are lies and there are memory lapses. Bill Clinton denied under oath having sex with Monica Lewinsky. Unless you're Wilt Chamberlain, sex is not the kind of thing you forget easily. Sandy Berger denied stuffing classified documents in his pants, an act not quite as elaborate as sex, but still involving a lot of muscle memory and unlikely to have been honestly forgotten.

Scooter Libby has just been convicted of four felonies that could theoretically give him 25 years in jail for . . . what? Misstating when he first heard a certain piece of information, namely the identity of Joe Wilson's wife.

Think about that. Can you remember when you first heard the name Joe Wilson or Valerie Plame? Okay, so it is not a preoccupation of yours. But it was a preoccupation of many Washington journalists and government officials called to testify at the Libby trial, and their memories were all over the lot. Former presidential press secretary Ari Fleischer testified under oath that he had not told Post reporter Walter Pincus about Mrs. Wilson. Pincus testified under oath that Fleischer definitely had.

From his picture, Mr Krauthammer looks a mature person, not the kind of dude who would write such a shit-piece. anyway...

1. Wayne Madsen laid into the Post today about yesterday's editorial attacking Wilson, Plame and Fitz.
Edited on Fri Mar-09-07 06:46 AM by oblivious
arguing "the Post does not have the right to criticize anyone involved in the prosecution of CIA Leakgate since the Post, itself, was complicit in the underlying crime of being involved in a major leak of classified information."

It is a shame that one of those things ain't "rational". Another that he fails at is "ethical".

5. It's kind of fun
to read and watch the republican reaction to Scooter Libby's being convicted. Scooter is a convicted felon, and all the spin in the world can't change that.

6. No, I can't remember
...when I first heard the name Plame. But, I do not solicit meetings with reporters who keep notes and I am not the assistant to the vice-president who also keeps notes on those meetings.
Libby did, and was, so he should have notes those notes and records of his meetings with reporters. You know he had them at one time, whether he chose to destroy them is anyones guess.
So, the idiot that wrote this piece left out a critical piece of information.

Let me assure you, that if indeed I had anything to do with outing a CIA agent, I would remember it in detail, as I am sure Libby did. I don't know why some fools insist on making excuses for traitors to our country. LIbby should spend many years in the penitentary for trying to undermine a CIA agent. Wouldn't it be great if our leaders in the whitehouse were actually on the people's side?

If Libby indeed had a memory this faulty,, I submit he is in pre-Alzheimers, and has no business with a job in the whitehouse.

9. Committing treason should stick in one's memory!
That is unless members of the administration do it so often and so casually that they should be given a pass on the whole idea. Ari Fleischer sure understood the problem right up front. I can't understand how all of the apologists think that someone wouldn't remember having done something of this magnitude.

11. But Forgetting You Lied Is Perfectly Natural!
Krauthammer and his ilk are just furious that they are finished, so finished that their sun will not rise again for their lifetime. St. Ronnie, Poppy, no one can stop this process. Dubya has truly screwed the pooch, when all he was trying to do was wag the dog.....

19. It's the "Reagan Defense"
"I don't recall" and it's many variations: "I don't remember," "I have no recollection," "I have no memory of that, " etc.

It worked quite well for Ronnie, who used it to escape impeachment and have an aircraft carrier named after him.
