Mistress' Family Challenges Edwards to Take DNA Test
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5546813&page=1

The family of John Edwards' former mistress, Rielle Hunter, is challenging the former senator to take a DNA paternity test after his claim that he did not father Hunter's 6-months-old child.

In the first reaction from Hunter's family, her younger sister Melissa told ABC News that Edwards should immediately follow through on his pledge to take a paternity test.

"Somebody must stand up and defend my sister," she said. "I wish that those involved would refrain from bad-mouthing my sister."

<snip>

"I would welcome participating in a paternity test," Edwards said. "I'm only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one."

1. He should just come clean
tell the truth and move on. I don't understand why is avoiding it, he only prolongs his own agony.

Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 05:49 PM by orangepeel68
he might be the father, and he doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt that he isn't.

But, as far as I know, Reille Hunter isn't claiming that he's the father, Andrew Young hasn't taken back the claim that he's the father, and, as you point out, it doesn't make sense for Edwards to deny it anymore.

13. I would certainly hope so. If he turns out to the be biological supplier, what little credibility
he currently has left will be kaput. And one would have to wonder if he has not completely broken with reality.

4. He "welcomed" this. I'm not sure that was a smart thing to do.
If it IS his child and if she is being monetarily compensated by his friend the referred to in the video, she may have agreed to refuse to do a test.
But her family....?

I don't think this will totally be over until there is a definite answer about the paternity.

6. Frankly, I think the outcome is pretty obvious at this point.
And I think he knows it. He is probably trying to spare Elizabeth the pain of having this made public.

I'm just leaving this. The fact that he campaigned and had many of us working for him when it should have been obvious to any rational person that his campaign would end up in controversy and scandal is a public issue.

The details surrounding the child are personal. They have to do only with the child, the mother, Edwards and his family.

This issue is not relevant to the public discourse about the level of openness and candor we can demand from candidates.

9. The fact of the matter is this:
IF the child is a product of the union between Edwards and Hunter, then said child is entitled to just as big of a piece of the Edwards pie as is the children he fathered with his legal wife.

So no, I don't think she accepts payola here.

John Edwards probably never gave her "the eye" or anything. :eyes:

What was she to think, being a single woman and he was a married man? Maybe, she thought he would soon be single. Maybe she thought Elizabeth Edwards' cancer was terminal, and he would be waiting in the wings. Romance causes people to think stupid things like that. It looks to me as though Rielle Hunter believed his lies.

But, you are probably right that a person is needy in character, to know that having an affair with a presidential hopeful would be a cyclone of trouble, and yet do it anyway.
But, we weren't there, so none of us can ever know.

32. All I need to know is that there are such things as birth control--pills, condoms, whatever.
And there is NO justification for her getting pregnant! Period.

If it turns out to be Edwards' kid, I guess I could conjure up some image in my head of two people so overcome with passion and desire that they threw all caution to the wind, - that it was an ethereal experience that transcended space and time and that their union rocked both their worlds, that they discovered their soulmates in each other, and in that one glorious moment in time that union created their love child. Bullshit!

Yeah, I could conjure up that image if I read trashy novels (which I don't).

33. They both are people bilking others into believing them to be something they aren't. They sold
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 11:22 AM by 1Hippiechick
each other a bill of goods, and he sold the public a bill of goods. He's not off the hook, by any means. You can call him anything you want - I think they deserve each other. She has no filming talent (IMO since I have looked at the seres of on-the-road clips she did w/Edwards) and after watching the first film she did, he exposed himself to be plastic. The first film would have finished him off if he had never even had the affair with Riley or whatever her name is, IMO. After seeing the first film, I will never believe another word he says--apology or not. He exposed his true self on that film, IMO, and it was repulsive. Watch it, if you don't believe me.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=167571&mesg_id=167571

They both are people pretending to be something they aren't. And I DO feel sorry for Edwards' family and for the baby produced by someone's union with Riley. Hell, they may have to line up the entire campaign for paternity tests.

The baby? Someone is going to have to explain her heritage to her when she is older. That's a grand beginning to know that her beginning will be chronicled in a history book, if she turns out to be Edwards' kid.

That was his undoing in all of this. Had there been no encounter at that hotel, he COULD have said "You know, this was 2 years ago, it's over, have not seen her since, blah, blah, blah"..
WHAT brought on him going to see her?? Has he still been seeing her and he just got caught this time? Is that picture real of him and the baby. For all we know the hotel visit may have beem a set up. Maybe someone needed coaxing to cough up more hush money?

36. Then how much did she pay Edwards to show up?
PLEASE.

By showing up at that hotel when he did, John Edwards tied his own noose. Period, paragraph.

Anyone who thinks the kid isn't his, please tell me why he didn't slap down a paternity test
during his television interview. That test would have saved his political career, and he didn't have
one.

These conspiracy theories are amusing, but it is far to easy to infer the facts of this case. None are
flattering to Edwards. He is cooked.

If she was being bedded by both Young and Edwards in the same time frame.

She sure made quite the hostess in that $500,000 home that Baron bought in NC (11/2006) in which she lived. Plenty of talk about her being moved OUT of NC by Baron yet no word on why he let her move INTO North Carolina to begin with.
