A Big F-You To DU...

Whoops! My keyboard slipped! Also, I wanted to get people's attention. What I really meant to say is:

"A Big Thank You To DU".

I've lurked here since around 2003, and during the 2004 General Election came to regard DU as more than a message board. Here, I found that people are interested in world events as well as politics. Along with the debates I enjoyed reading, I came to regard DU as a great resource for finding Breaking News that was hard to track down in other places. I could always head over to the BBC or CBC, but if I really wanted to find all coverage of world events in one place I really only needed to come here and scroll down the latest list. While I don't post much, I find myself checking DU daily, sometimes for an hour or more catching up on what's going on out there.

That brings me to today. As my partner has made my eyes bleed with non-stop, endless coverage of the Olympics 27 hours a day since Friday, (except for that one time tonight during the diving competition when I sat enraptured at the screen), and as American news outlets have done us all proud with their endless dissection of how shocking John Edwards' affair is, (since we all know he's the only person to ever have made a mistake), I have found DU to be the one place I can come at any time to read up on the latest news about our possible brewing WWIII between Georgia and Russia.

As scary as that situation is, and as much as people here like tearing into one another over Hillary and Hiroshima and stuff, I really love this place. And everyone here. It's fine work DU does, and is much appreciated by those of us out there that really care about what's going on.

Also, Obama rocks, and whoever made those stickies up top say Obama earlier rocked as well.

Hold on, maybe that's why I enjoyed this evening's diving competition.

Which actually reminds me of a funny story. After reading all the news stories and debates about the Georgia-Russia war-thing, I found it hard to decide who's side I thought was right. Was it the Georgians, overwhelmed by Russian military superiority and invasion, or the Russians, who appear to have been, (at least initially), attempting to intervene in what they believed to be an ethnic-cleansing...

In the end I came down on the side of the Russians. What a great looking diving team.

On a more serious note, as I said earlier I have lurked here, and sometimes posted, for a good 5 years now. Time I paid my dues. I have received much from this place for free. And for every one of me that posts a thank-you thread to everyone here, I am sure there are thousands more that read every day and never post.

Wow, snail mail! I'm not even sure I would know where stamps are.

I have spent so much time reading here for so long. There was a time a few years back, right before I discovered this place, that I posted online a lot. It was actually on a religious website, where we debated science and politics. I felt that my work suffered because of the time I spent there, so I quit. Shortly thereafter I discovered DU.

I made a decision not to post a lot here. Not because I didn't want to, or because I didn't think I had anything to say, but rather because I was afraid I would get sucked in again to some great debate.

So I read instead...

So many years it seems. I have come to know many of you by your handles here. SwampRat. cali. DeepModemMom. And many others, including now you, tavalon. You have all become kind of like a sitcom family to me--and not in the negative way that it sounds.

DU has become the family that I invite into my home every day. I turn on the screen and there everyone is, talking about the things that I want to know about. Fighting over the things that I think are important. I have learned so much from everyone here, and broadened my own horizons and view of the world.

Maybe I should have been posting more often. Maybe I will.

Okay, so Josue, (that's Latin, and he's the ominous partner mentioned above), is on the couch at 11:30pm local time watching some Olympic gymnastics thing. Geesh, he's been watching this for, like, 1 million hours now, and people are getting their war on and stuff.
