McCain voted for the Bear Study he blasted Saturday
While John McCain was pandering to his base Saturday at the forum with Rick Warren he gave government spending of 3 million dollars for a DNA study of bears as an example of why America hates Washington. Well it turns out that John McCain actually voted in favor of the bill with pork barrel spending attached to it for the Bear study.

FactCheck.Org

Summary

Republican presidential candidate John McCain cites three absurd-sounding examples of pork-barrel spending in a recent ad: a "bridge to nowhere," a study of the DNA of bears and a Woodstock museum.

McCain is known for fighting against earmarks, the other term lawmakers use for funding of pet projects back home. But he appears to have chosen these three because they're easy to mock, not because he had significant involvement in removing them from the budget.
  • He never specifically went after the "bridge to nowhere," and he was absent for key votes on its funding.
  • While he tried to cut money for several other projects in the same bill, he never proposed cutting the bear study and voted for the final bill containing it.
  • He wasn't present for the most important votes on the Woodstock museum, including one on an amendment he co-sponsored to kill the earmark and divert some of the funds.

1. Maybe he should fund a study on why he can't tell the truth.
Still, I'd rather they spend the money in America than throw it into the Iraq toilet.

6. a liar and a hypocrite
and ill-prepared as well. is there someone left who believes he'd make a decent president? i'm thinking that the only people pulling for him to win fall into categories:

ignorant, stupid racists
ignorant, stupid fundies
bright, calculating neocons who know who will be in control if mccain ends up in the white house (hint: it won't be mccain any more than it's bush)

8. I get very tired of people criticizing studies they know nothing about.
There are studies that waste a lot of money. However, there are also studies that can yield some

important results even if the titles sound silly. This is part of the reason the US is so far

behind in basic research. Without the basic research, we don't have the basis for important

breakthroughs.:banghead:

13. Bearmark?
The media will continue to reinforce the McCain-fighter-of-earmarks story regardless of the facts. The biggest fact they ignore? Earmarks represent less than 1% of the federal budget...

14. The bear study was to help keep them from going extinct
Under the Endangered Species Act, the government was required to arrive at figures for grizzly bear population totals -- and analyzing the DNA found in tufts of fur caught on bushes was the most effective way to do that. It wasn't some kind of pure scientific research and definitely wasn't the result of any kind of earmark.

It was part of an attempt to help save one of our most iconic native species from extinction -- and McCain needs to be called on his contempt for that far more than on his having voted for it.

15. I'll vote for that too.
Doesn't have to be pure research to get nailed. Just have a title

someone can make fun of.

16. McBush isn't the sharpest tack. They just ran a clip of him speaking
on CNN and he was trashing Congress for taking 5 weeks vacation, making the remark that Congress never misses the chance to get a raise or take a vacation. Pssssst . . . McBush . . . you're IN the Congress at this very moment.

18. McLame is a pathetic Asshole.
He is purposely ignorant about the bear study & then redicules it, all the while still voting for the Bill.. Most people think that he is qualified to be Pres. I say that he is not. He is stupid. Maybe even more so than Busholini, who should have never been selected as Pres. & then "elected". It is still doubtful if Busholini actually won that one.
