Alaska: Two Incumbents Face A Chill From Voters

Alaskans go to the polls Tuesday to decide whether Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young -- veteran Republican incumbents both entangled in a far-reaching corruption scandal -- will return in November to face the strongest Democratic challenges to their seats in decades.

Recent polling shows only Mr. Young at risk of an upset in the primary, but both men trail likely Democratic challengers in general-election matchups. While Mr. Stevens leads his closest Republican challenger by an overwhelming margin, Mr. Young was running about six percentage points ahead of his biggest rival, Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, according to an Ivan Moore Research poll released Aug. 14 for local media.

The Moore poll showed both Mr. Stevens and Mr. Young being handily defeated in the fall by likely Democratic challengers. ...............
