Rove Tied Directly to ProsecutorGate and the Suborning of Justice for Partisan Prosecution

Posted on Sat, Mar. 10, 2007
Rove was asked to fire U.S. attorney
By Margaret Talev and Marisa Taylor
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Presidential advisor Karl Rove and at least one other member of the White House political team were urged by the New Mexico Republican party chairman to fire the state's U.S. attorney because of dissatisfaction with his job performance including his failure to indict Democrats in a voter fraud investigation in the battleground election state.

In an interview Saturday with McClatchy Newspapers, Chairman Allen Weh said he complained in 2005 about then-U.S. Attorney David Iglesias to a White House liaison who worked for Rove and asked that he be removed. Weh said he followed up with Rove personally in late 2006 during a visit to the White House.

Weh's account calls into question the Justice Department's stance that the recent decision to fire eight U.S. attorneys, including Iglesias, was made without the White House weighing in. Justice Department officials have said the White House's involvement was limited to approving a list of the U.S. attorneys after the Justice Department made the decision to fire them.

Rove could not be reached Saturday and the White House said it would have no immediate response. A Justice Department spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Thanks for this post, kpete. I hope the wheels of justice grind a certain few people to powder.

22. And that's plenty to say, and I think you're right-on with it, too.
Unchecked power.

Well, with any luck at all, some of his Rethuglican colleagues in the House and Senate will call for his resignation, pending the outcome of this tie-in.

If the trail leads unquestionably to Rove's front door, the pressure will mount for him to pack up and leave.

He's a miracle survivor of the Libby trial, IMO.

17. If I'm in charge, Cobalt-60, there's no one else I'd rather have on
that detail.

Rove is very close to a nihilist. I can vehemently oppose Dick Lugar or Tim Pawlenty, but as bad as they are, they aren't dark-hearted and morally oblivious the way Rove is.

He's all bad news, all the time.

31. If you'll allow me a Hallmark moment here, I feel sorry for Rove's wife
and son.

I can't be the only American who vehemently resents Rove's privileged life, his unchecked power (as others here have ably and properly called it).

It seems morally bankrupt for Rove to pursue the goals he's pursued and at the same time be husband to a woman and father to a son, and expect them not to be victims of his public image.

And his public image is one stinking rotting corpse of a thing.

8. Arlen Specter's remark yesterday has more resonance today as a result
of this tie-in with Karl Rove. In and of itself, I kind of back-burnered Specter's comment, since he makes a bold statement and then backtracks completely on it 90% of the time, but perhaps he or his staff knew about Rove's involvement and that it was going to hit the newsstands before the Sunday morning news shows.

Anybody have any insights on this? It's the kind of gossip I prefer -- much better than Anna Nicole or the Duke rape story.

Let's drag a few Republicans through the mud on this one.

30. The MAN Responsible
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF LAW MICHAEL E. O’NEILL is currently taking a leave of absence to serve as Chief Counsel for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.

Professor O'Neill specializes in criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law. In addition to his academic duties, he served as a Commissioner of the United States Sentencing Commission from 1999 to 2005. Before joining George Mason's law school faculty full-time in 1998, he taught as a member of the adjunct faculty. Professor O'Neill clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court and Judge David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Professor O'Neill also served as general counsel for the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, and as an appellate litigator in the U.S. Justice Department's Criminal Division Appellate Section.

Professor O'Neill earned his B.A. summa cum laude (1987) from Brigham Young University and his J.D. (1990) from Yale Law School. While at Yale, Professor O'Neill was editor of articles and book reviews for the Yale Law Journal and articles editor of the Yale Journal on Regulation.

I embolden the text above to alert you to the irony of him specializing in constitutional law. It appears to me he didn't learn anything about the constitution. Otherwise he would not have Snuck in a Provision to abolish a law just hours before the vote.

I started a thread about this topic. Check it out and give a kick if you don't mind...

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/nation/stories/031007dnnatattorneys.3779660.html
Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., and Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., chairwoman of the subcommittee directing the inquiry, sent a letter Friday to Ms. Miers, a longtime Bush loyalist who left her post in January, requesting that she submit to an interview.

Ms. Miers couldn't be reached for comment.

Just because the New Mexico guy asked Rove to do it doesn't mean Rove did anything (since the New Mexico guy was directly leaning on the local U.S. attorney), but with any luck, they'll turn up some evidence that he DID do something. 55. Nice Gem from article: "Voter Fraud" ...connect that to Rove...
Several Republican activists interviewed for this story said their frustration with Iglesias dated back to before the 2004 election, and his decision to create a task force on voter fraud rather than try to prosecute Democrats who submitted allegedly fraudulent voter registrations.

They also felt that he had largely botched a corruption case against the state treasurer, a Democrat. After a mistrial, federal prosecutors eventually secured a conviction.

By last fall, Wilson's re-election campaign was in serious trouble. But Republicans, including Weh, said they remained convinced that federal indictments were about to come down against several high-profile Democrats in a long-brewing corruption investigation related to courthouse construction projects.

It's been a pattern for many years. Everybody says what an asshole sick sonofabitch he is (& oh yeah, he is), then it dies down pretty fast, and in short order another lie/crime of KKKArl's will be brought to light, it'll die down pretty fast, and in short order . . . . . You get the idea. When in the hell is he gonna go, AND PAY???? I am sick of waiting. By the way, the same goes for bu$h, & the rest of his crime family. I'm sick of feeling giddy ("Fitzmas", etc.), and then left, sapped of energy, sick of the helpless feeling that bu$hCo. got away with yet another one.
