I miss The Camel News Caravan and John Cameron Swayze.
Just 15 minutes of reading news headlines and an occasional interview with some newsmaker.
John sitting there and smoking his Camel.
I often wondered how the broadcast would have gone if his sponsor had been Jack Daniels.

Anyway, no hype, no spin, no in depth analysis.
Just "Today this happened here, that happened there."
And you went "Hunh, how about that?" and went back to your newspaper.

Then the newscast went to a half hour, then an hour, and now 24/7.
And 95% of it isn't news any more.
It's a cliff-hanger, melodramatic, Saturday afternoon at the local movie palace, serial horse opera.
"Coming up next: Will X be able to face the challenge of Y?"
"After the break: Is your breakfast cereal killing you?"
"Are the rumors about Brittany and her chihuahua true? Stay tuned!"
"Could this common vegetable cure cancer? Dr. Sonjay Gupta, next."

Tease-hype, tease-hype, tease-hype.

And...Does CNN's "Best political team in broadcasting" now carry about the same weight as Faux's "Fair and balanced"?

2. Was thinking something similar a few days ago;
Being a boomer in the senior category these days , the old black and white TV of the 50's with Huntley and Brinkley or Uncle Walter giving you information that you could take to the bank. What passes for news today is sick. CNN and MSNBC ,not to mention Fox, should just be turned off and forgotten. Ratings are taken off your cable box or your dish today , so let their numbers slide into oblivion and let their sponsors leave them....good riddance. Until they take the net away from us , Ill get my news here and other trusted places.

5. As A Kid...
I remember watching the 1964 conventions with my parents. It was gavel to gavel and the newsmen (there weren't any women in those days) would shut up when the speeches were going on, only talking during the interludes. That was the days of John Chancellor, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Walter Cronkite and Eric Severeid. Now the cables are a total joke...they think they're the story.

7. Didn't John Cameron Swayze do those Armstrong Roofing (??) commercials using a DC-7B (1958)?
Or was that a Timex commercial? I remember a DC-7 running up all four with a house close behind. Roof survives, or watch? Anyway .. four R-3350s! Got to love that! I later flew the SP-2Es with two R-3350-xxx-xxxs and two Westinghouse jets.

DemoTex and a shot-up Lockheed SP-2E Neptune (during Lam Son 719, early 1971).
