Sea Surface Temperatures from GOES-8 (Gulf of Mexico)
This is the weekly average through August 29th that were compiled from NOAA's GOES-8 satellite. Overlay the image on top of the forecast track of Gustav and you can see why the analysts at the NHC are very concerned.

4. Landfall around the middle west of the LA coast is probably the best place
at this point.

From what I remember of Rita, there is not much in that area, and what was there Rita took out.

It will play hell with oil/gas production, though.

Still, beats running a 25 ft. storm surge into what remains of New Orleans or up the poop-chute of the Houston ship channel.

3. Holy Crap!
Isotherms over 27.5c are what's needed to generate hurricanes. The scale is at the bottom of the pic... :yoiks:
