SoCal DUers: Meeting on how to defeat the religious right's ballot measures coming up on Sept. 20!
AU-OC General Meeting
“Stop the Religious Right's Propositions”
Defeat Prop. 4, Prop. 8 and the Villa Park "In God We Trust" measure
Irvine Ranch Water District (Multipurpose Room)

15600 Sand Canyon Ave. (at Waterworks)
Irvine, CA 92618
(IRWD neither supports nor endorses the cause nor the activities of organizations which use the district's meeting rooms that are made available as a public service)

Prop 4: Waiting Period and Parental Notification Before Termination of Minor’s Pregnancy; Constitutional Amendment.
AU-OC will be teaming with Planned Parenthood to stop yet another assault on reproductive freedom by the religious right. Most teens already consult family members when an unintended pregnancy occurs, but for those who do not have a healthy family relationship, a law like this can lead a desperate teen into having an unsafe illegal abortion or even suicide.

Prop 8: Limit on Marriage; Constitutional Amendment.
On May 15, 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is un-constitutional in California. The religious right has already qualified a ballot initiative to amend the California State Constitution to prevent same-sex marriage and to nullify the marriages that have already taken place. AU-OC will be teaming with California Faith for Equality to stop this measure to legalize discrimination.

Villa Park: Posting “In God We Trust” Initiative.
A group in Bakersfield called “In God We Trust America, Inc.” has been soliciting conservative city council members to introduce resolutions to post “In God We Trust” in every city council chamber in California. The Villa Park city council voted to put it on the ballot. Local citizens are trying to defeat the measure and AU-OC is helping them. The motto “In God We Trust” does not date back to our founding fathers, it is the product of the McCarthy era Congress as an attempt to promote Christian orthodoxy in the name of fighting Communism. This is yet another attempt by the religious right to inject wedge issues in an election year.

What You Can Do to Stop the Props!
We need volunteers to spend a few hours making phone calls. We need volunteers to talk to their neighbors and to their co-workers. And we need contributions for media ads to counter the religious right propaganda and the assault on personal freedom.
