8. The red words..
There are some Bibles that have the Christ's words in red.

Ask them to read the red words and think about what they say.

Only every once in a while does it work.

Ask them why the Christ has _two_ devout men, the priest and the levite pass by the man injured by thieves but the first pagan, a Samaritan, stopped and aided him.

And then the Christ asked the student of the law who was his brother.

The student of the law answered that it was the man who showed mercy, the Samaritan.

Why two devout men?

10. Samaritans are not pagans
just followers of a slightly different religion

20. They weren't Jewish..
And Jews of the time would walk a long way out of their way not to pass through Samaria.

They were thought of as evil by the Jews of the time.

7. Yes,
Follow the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ: Feed the Hungry, Clothe the naked, Visit the sick and imprisoned...be a voice for the voiceless. Take heed "Christ's preferential option for the poor"!

9. Actually read the four Gospels and not just the sections that your preacher
chooses to harp on. Pay special attention to the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, the parable of the Pharisee and the publican, the Beatitudes, and the Sermon on the Mount. Try in vain to find anything that supports the "prosperity gospel." Also note that Jesus says that NO ONE knows when the world will end.

Despite his bad reputation, Paul has some good stuff: First Corinthians 13, Romans 2:12-15.

Ill-informed people talk of the "stern Old Testament God," but look at Micah 6:8, and Ecclesiastes 2, which is a very modern-sounding description of boredom with mere material acquisition.

"That's just bad theology" when he refers to the Repub fundies. I always get a kick when he says that.

12. My Mama taught Sunday school and did a lot of Bible study.
She could not stand the way people twisted religion. I remember talking to her when some of those vile people would start up. I'd ask her if this was what Jesus really meant. She told me no and I really think she wanted to bitch slap them.

Use the Golden Rule.
Leviticus 19:18
Leviticus 19:34
Luke 6:31

this is my favorite: We should not forget to entertain strangers, lest we entertain angels unaware.
- - - - Bible - Hebrews 13:2

They will get caught out being evil to some heavenly personage. HA!

15. A few things:
Your salvation is not determined by political party
Christianity does not all boil down to "Thou shalt not be a queer"
God is not a Republican (or a Democrat, to be fair)
War is bad. Gay marriage is not.
You do not have the right to run the country on your beliefs. Even Jesus was in favor of church/state separation.

17. Matthew 25: 31- 46
"When I was hungry hungry, you gave me food,
I was thirsty, you gave me a drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
I was naked and you clothed me,
I was sick, and you took care of me,
I was in prison, and you visited me..

Come inherit the kingdom prepared for you.."

It's about social justice,
not judging others,
nor is it about amassing huge piles of
money and possessions for ourselves.

18. I was going to cite this passage too, and emphasize its larger meaning
In Chapter 25 Jesus draws a distinction between his true and false followers. The true followers fed the hungry, welcomed the stranger, etc. They are welcomed into heaven. His false followers don't do any of this and, consequently, are sent to hell. When they ask Jesus when did we not feed you, etc., he said whatever you do to the "least of his brethren" you do to him.

Let anyone with ears to hear, listen.
