Here we go again.
You guys remember during sElection 2004, when John Kerry made a joke in which he called Bush stupid?

The GOP turned it around and made it appear as if Kerry called the soldiers in Iraq stupid. And lazy.

With the media's help of course.

That's what they are now doing with the lipstick remark.

They never heard a statement they wouldn't twist like one of Bush's ill-fated pretzels.

1. This one doesn't appear to be working.
The media, to their credit, is all over this one. Most of them are following the Obama video with the McCain video of the same statement and noting the hypocrisy.

2. Its not working this time however.
The MSM is actually doing its job and pointing out that McLame used the same line about Hillary's health plan two years ago. Its backfiring and making them look like whiners trying to use the sexism card.

12. They're tired of being forced to prop up the 'pukes
They've had to do it for eight years (more, if you count the Lewinsky crap), and now, with Cheney and his henchmen not too fond of McCain and so only halfheartedly threatening them to toe the line, they're starting rebel a little bit. Keith (a hero) is so brave that he went too far (in the eyes of the corp. media overlords) and they yanked him off the campaign trail, but perhaps if the reporters and talking heads keep this up, bit by bit, we'll get our media back. Cross fingers!

3. You don't think he meant Palin?
I can't decide. The crowd sure got the joke whether it was intended by Obama or not. Maybe he meant it, maybe he used the old line without realizing it could be interpreted to mean Palin given her recent joke about lipstick.

But I remain convinced he has to ignore Palin. It is axiomatic that the No. 1 guy on the ticket does not get into a battle with the No. 2 guy (or girl) on the opposing ticket. By referencing her, Obama is elevating her to even higher prominence.

7. I think it was clearly a double entendre...
and I think he realized what he was doing by saying it, and what the probable reaction would be.

9. Did you watch the whole clip?
He was talking about McCain's failed *policies. It seems pretty clear to me.

13. "Lipstick on a pig" is a common metaphor
and is not a personal attack. I've seen it used on DU many, many times over the years to refer to the Repub's PR spin.

17. I know
I've heard the expression for years. In other contexts, it is fine. But coming on the heels of her infamous lipstick reference, the crowd sure seemed to think it was a jab at her. They were whooping and clapping before he even finished the line.

18. The crowd misinterpreted the statement - their reaction is what generated McCain's hissy
if they hadn't whooped like a Springer audience at what's a common phrase I think it wouldn't have received much attention from McCain's camp.

Fortunately, the press has basically called McCain on his over-reaction esp. since he's used the phrase as well.

5. Easily debunked in my mind.
There's video of McSame using the same remark about Hillary and healthcare.

I say Obama should go back on the offensive and state his outrage at their new sex education ad.

Peace.

11. Bush's policies are the pig
if someone wants to go a step further and draw the conclusion that Palin is the lipstick, brought in to make bad policies look good, then go ahead. But the truth remains the same ... Putting an attractive young person on the McCain ticket doesn't change the fact that the policies look bad, maybe makes them nicer to look at, but ultimately makes no substantial changes to them.
