Why would anyone rate a thread "average"?

It seemed like a valid question to me. I understand the balancing out thing, but why is there even an "average" vote option?

average occurs when someone's must read is balanced out with someone else's disruptive.

12. It appears that an "average" rating gives the thread recommends,

so it's not quite the same as not rating the thread. It now takes 10 votes to get on the greatest page, but even a vote of "disruptive" gives one recommend.

Threads are listed in order of their thread ratings. (A vote of "Must read" is assigned a rating of 5; "Recommended" is 4; "Average" is 3; "Skip it" is 2; and "Disruptive" is 1. All the votes are then averaged to get the thread rating.) The number value of the rating is shown, along with the number of votes. A thread must have 10 votes to be eligible to appear on the Greatest Page.

I think it will take a little while to get used to the new system.
