OK, the past can't be changed, but if you were Hillary's advisor now, what's her best move to win?
Is her best political move to follow Edwards and admit tomorrow that she made a huge mistake, the worst mistake of her life, trusted an idiot, and wants to make amends by getting the hell out of Iraq within a set time table, one year for example, gradually removing troops month by month?

The consequences of this are two-fold. If she admits she god forbid made a mistake it may help her with democratic primary voters, but the republicans will eviscerate her in the general election as an indecisive woman who can't stand behind her decisions. It'll be what happened to Kerry magnified exponentially.

1. She should stop triangulating and trying to please everyone. Instead take principled stands
and explain them. Let people know what she stands for and against.

3. targeting the republican vote
Hillary is following her gut sense to incorporate the rightwing in to her political audience by
standing behind her earlier mistake. Having a mistake in common might be a reason to cross
the aisle ? at the polling booth? we'll see.

If she wants to be president, stand up and fight for the PEOPLE who elect her.

This advice is hardly unique to Hillary, but she could benefit greatly from it.

11. no, 2008 is her year
She would be 65 in 2012. Getting old.

Also, she would be either running against a republican incumbent or locked out of the process until 2016 and running against an incumbent VP.

This is her one and only shot. You get open elections with no incumbent running maybe once in a lifetime.

9. My Advice? Be Honest, Be Sincere, Have Firm Convictions And America's Best Interests At Heart.
I'd say don't fear repercussion and don't overdo taking stances based on being PC. I would say be strong, be firm, show resolve, show empathy, show integrity and avoid sounding shrill. I'd advise her to lay under the stars overnight and think deeply about how she truly feels about the big issues, and then stand by those convictions during the campaign.

That's exactly what I would tell her as well. "...think deeply about how she truly feel about the big issues, and then stand by those convictions during the campaign." I think an action like that by Clinton would bring a lot of people over to her side.

There's a chance things might turn around in Iraq. Maliki is going against Sadr and US troops have had some success against the Mahdi Army. I know hopes have been dashed many times before and Iraq seems hopeless now, but there is always uncertainty about the future. I think those on the right made a huge mistake being certain Iraq would turn out their way. Certainty stops the mind from taking in contradictory information. The new plan for Iraq could work.

I'd advise Hillary to put it all on Bush and keep asking Bush tough questions. Get on top of the early spin by attributing any success with turning Maliki around to Democratic pressure.

13. She should get open fair election law passed now. She should introduce and pass
Public Financing of elections.
She should take the lead on real liberal progressive ideas
like Universal Health care and
shifting the tax Burden from labor to corporate profits.

She should also demand that the pResident details his plans for exactly what the hell his plan is for the end of our illegal occupation of Iraq.

When he has none she should call for a vote to re-authorize the Iraqi war resolution and vote it down. Then aWoL will have to withdraw the troops within 60 days.

16. Herman, you need to quit worrying about this. You are driving yourself crazy
You can't make people like her. Not everyone is going to like any candidate. That is why there is a choice.
You find the best for you and you do what you can but, you cannot make people like your guy better than their own.
Be happy with your choice and let others support who they want. Do not try to force people.
It makes them dig in more and resist more. I do.
I also get really rebellous when people try to force me.
You have your reasons for supporting her and I have mine for not. I wish you luck and you wish me luck and we let the best one win.
But, you are going to drive yourself nuts if you keep worrying and trying to change people's candidate to yours.

Without getting into whether or not I think she's the best candidate, my understanding of the polls is that Clinton is the clear front-runner for the Democratic nomination, so whatever her formula is appears to be working.

37. So I guess her formula
is massive name recognition - a ton of money - and a MSM who is pushing her candidacy

She has been mostly missing in action for YEARS has not taken a strong stand on anything - she ran and hid from the press when Russ Feingold was trying to get the idiot in chief censured for warrantless wiretapping - and when she met with Cindy Sheehan Hillary responded to the press that we should not get out of Iraq because we don't want those who have died to have died in vain - almost verbatim to a line Bush had stated a few days before. That is when Hillary lost me forever...

Hillary stands for nothing but election and listens to nobody but her pathetic consultants.

She needs to get a clue search her soul for what she truly believes in and then go campaign on that.

Think of this if Hillary Clinton is elected and serves two terms we will have either a Bush or a Clinton in the White House for 28 consecutive years - I for one think we need some new blood.

People voted based on the damn war. If she can't even acknowledge support for a timetable for withdrawal, then she should simply forget about winning the presidency in 2008 because America will be even more pissed off in Nov. 2008 because we're still stuck in Iraq on election day.

24. Run as if you have already won the nomination. Never mention Dem opponents
Do not debate with them, buy massive amounts of three and two minute commercials to speak directly to the people on issues. Make the campaign "Hillary and the others." Spend tons and tons on targeted three and two minute commercials on cable channels, force the others to spend and then outspend them.

Refer to any questions about other candidates' attacks or questions as something she is not concerned with, that her campaign is with the American people and nothing the other candidates are doing or saying effect that.

26. If I were Hillary's adviser...
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 08:11 PM by Meldread
I would tell her that she should not admit that voting for the IRW was a huge mistake, for the same reason you listed. If Hillary wants to win in the General Election, she will need to show the following qualities (this goes for every candidate):

* The ability to be resolute and strong in her convictions, but at the same time appear flexible and open to new ideas. This shows that she works from a strong foundation, and does not sway with the wind. This is difficult to pull off without either believing it (and becoming like Bush) or seeming like a total fraud. I think Hillary is doing a good job of this already, when I saw her on ABC after the State of the Union Address - I could see her as the next President of the United States.

* That brings me to my next point. She must APPEAR Presidential. This is something that I feel that she does very well already. It requires a certain amount of maturity, statesmanship, confidence and poise - this is something that Hillary has in abundance. I really do believe the old saying is true, "If you believe something hard enough, it will come true." If Hillary believes she will be the next President of the United States, and begins acting like it - people will begin to see her in that light and it will in turn translate into votes.

* Hillary must not engage Edwards or Obama directly. They both outshine her with their charisma and charm. This is where Hillary is lacking. She does have a certain amount of appeal, but if she stands next to them her appeal turns into that of a cold fish. Instead, she must pretend that she has already won the Primary. Just pretend it is over and instead put her sights on Bush himself. She must constantly contrast herself to him - because like in 2006 the Presidential Election of 2008 is going to be a referendum on Bush. We are going to have a Democratic President, there is little doubt in my mind about this, it is only a question of who it will be - and already we have many qualified candidates.

If Hillary contrasts herself with Bush and pretends that Edwards and Obama don't exist they will get less coverage. She will continue to grow her war chest. She will increase her chances of becoming the Nominee by a large percentage.

* Hillary must find her own voice. She must find her moral center and stand her ground. If she BELIEVES something should be a certain way and people disagree, it is her duty to bring people to her side. That is the difference between a leader and a follower. Leader's pave the way and find people to follow them. A follower waits for someone else to pave the way and then follows.

* Hillary must combat Obama and Edwards and their populist campaigns. Hillary cannot run a campaign like them. It just won't work for her, so she has to find a way to convince people that she has their concerns at her heart and that she wants to improve their lives. She has to combat the perception that she is just seeking to further her own career and name.

* Hillary must get to Iowa and New Hampshire to begin wooing Primary voters. Like last time, whoever wins those states is likely going to win the primary. Hillary has an insane amount of cash to spend, and it will just keep getting larger. Spend it there. Outspend the others 2 to 1. Drown their message, kill their campaigns.

* Hillary must not feel afraid to shoot from the hip. Like Bush, Hillary is a heavily scripted individual. Everything that she does is highly corographed a head of time. People can tell the difference when someone is speaking from their heart and when someone is speaking from a script. She must learn to shoot from the hip, to deviate from the script - especially when she sees an opportunity in which she can perform in a way that will woo potential voters.

* Hillary must position herself as a left leaning moderate. Despite public perception, people are sick of the right wing zealots. They don't like them. They don't like the Republican party's association with them. She should not seek to bring over Bush's Republican base, but instead play to those on the left and the moderates.

* Hillary must prepare to aggressively defend herself against attacks. She is a lightning rod, and Republicans are salivating at the possibility that she could be the Democratic Nominee. She should not allow herself to be swift boated, and she should answer each attack launched against her with a counter attack. Let no accusation or attack stand. Be aggressive, and if necessary, fight dirty.

* She needs to woo the military vote, which despite the fact that many of them are angry at Bush and the Republican Party, many are still Republican Voters. Republicans are perceived as the "pro-military" party. Hillary must do all that she can to show support for the troops. She must take as many pictures with them as she can, and bring to light the suffering that Bush has put them through. She must also get Jim Webb on her side, and get him to campaign on her behalf to land the military vote. If she can get a picture of a "strong manly soldier" crying on her shoulder over the loss of a fellow comrade, while comforting him and appearing motherly - that would be the photo op of the century. She must not hide from the bad things going on in Iraq, but instead do everything she can to bring light to them. All the suffering and all of the pain must be brought to light, and she must be seen as the "motherly figure" who can make it all better. Everyone loves their mother, and everyone knows that when something goes wrong that a mother's support can go a long way to make it better - Hillary can capitalize on this emotion. This is something her male competitors cannot.

Hillary has a long road ahead of her. The nomination is far from in the bag, but I do believe that she will eventually transform herself into the front runner. The real race is between her and Obama, Edwards couldn't win the Democratic Primary last time - how does he intend to win this time against both Obama and Hillary? I don't see it happening. Hillary should offer Obama the VP seat if she wins, form an alliance with him to knock out the other contenders.

Hillary's main opposition would appear if Gore entered into the race. He is the one candidate that I believe would unify the party behind him regardless of what Hillary attempts to do. However, I think one thing is certain: Hillary only has one shot to do this right. If she fails all bets are off for a future Presidential run. If Obama loses he could easily try again like Edwards, but if Hillary allows herself to be demolished by her opponents her political career will suffer.

It is definitely going to be an uphill battle for her, because she must balance pleasing the Democratic base (us - her main opposition) and the General Election voters.

30. Raise lots of money, run as a "moderate", and say as little of substance as possible.
Works most of the time for candidates of both parties and is usually what political "advisers" recommend.

Add in photo-ops, lots of flags, and a plenitude of platitudes.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” - H.L. Mencken

Those kind of subliminal messages work wonders with fundies.

I'd urge her to repent for voting yes on a lot more than only the IWR, to drop her campaign of destruction against democracy (which is what it became when she announced she wouldn't bother with public funding), to call for public campaign finance and free media time for all candidates on the ballot, and to call for an immediate impeachment over Iraq and a real investigation of 9/11.

Otherwise, I'd do the right thing and resign.

Now tell me, what would you do if you were Cheney's adviser?
