real mavericks don't call themselves mavericks

McCain at the debate: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/26/debate.mississippi.transcript/

"I have a long record and the American people know me very well and that is independent and a maverick of the Senate and I'm happy to say that I've got a partner that's a good maverick along with me now."

Obama at Black Caucus dinner last night: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/27/AR2008092703201.html

"Change isn't just a slogan, saying, 'I'm for change, too. I'm a maverick,' " he said, pausing for the crowd's laughter and applause. "He's taking my stuff."

and again, in N.C.: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/washingtondc/la-na-campaign28-2008sep28,0,7520653.story

"He's been grabbing our signs, using our slogans," Obama said. "The other day he said, 'I think we need to turn the page.'

"It's like, 'C'mon, John. I've been saying that for . . . how long have I been saying that? Pretty soon I'm going to have to start saying I'm a maverick."

3. I went into the Maverick Bar
I went into the Maverick Bar
In Farmington, New Mexico.
And drank double shots of bourbon
backed with beer.
My long hair was tucked up under a cap
I'd left the earring in the car.

Two cowboys did horseplay
by the pool tables,
A waitress asked us
where are you from?
a country-and-western band began to play
"We don't smoke Marijuana in Muskokie"
And with the next song,
a couple began to dance.

They held each other like in High School dances
in the fifties;
I recalled when I worked in the woods
and the bars of Madras, Oregon.
That short-haired joy and roughness –
America – your stupidity.
I could almost love you again.

We left--onto the freeway shoulders--
under the tough old stars--
In the shadow of bluffs
I came back to myself,
To the real work, to
"What is to be done."

--Gary Snyder

2. Real Mavericks are from South Texas.
I saw Maury Maverick, Jr., speak one time in San Antonio.

They are a proud Democratic Texas family, where the word "maverick", meaning a cow that has wandered away from the herd, originated.

Maverick is a proud Democratic name that McCain has tarred.

5. Good point, a real maverick act off of principle and that's what

guides them in their decision making. The way McCain is using the term it make you think his so called maverick image was a political strategy or stunt to fulfill his future ambitions which is running for president. McCain is even using it as a campaign issue to try to corner Obama when he says Barack never broke with his party.

There is a thin line between a maverick and an opportunist and McCain seems to be the latter. You don't here Ron Paul or Chuck Hagel running publicizing every instance in which they voted against they're party or the president, they just do it.

8. It is called tooting one's own horn.
Edited on Sun Sep-28-08 02:51 AM by Jamastiene
A hero does not call themselves a hero. Others do.
Someone does not have to go around claiming they are great in bed. Others do.
A great philosopher does not call themselves a great philosopher. Others do.

If someone constantly toots their own horn about something like that, it means they are full of shit most of the time.
