I'm a freelance artist so I usually work on a per-project or contract basis.

I make less than 40k a year. No 401k, no healthcare, MODEST savings. I rent, and have invested more than $25,000 into my apartment, with nothing to show for it. The only thing I own outright is my car.

3. If the economy completely tanks, no one will buy your art

The worst case scenario here is Great Depression II (or maybe Greatest Depression?). The real danger is the credit market. If it freezes, no one will be able to get loans. Businesses won't be able to pay their employees, banks will close en masse, huge layoffs, rising unemployment, deflationary death spiral, rest of the world's economy also crushed, etc. etc.

If everyone is much poorer, spending on luxuries, like art, will fall off dramatically. This probably won't be good for you.
