DON'T LET THIS ELECTION BE STOLEN
In light of the rampant voter roll purging and caging that has been going on across the country for the past 8 years, The MICAH Project and America in Solidarity of Tacoma, Washington have declared October 1, 2008 (THAT'S TOMORROW) to be NATIONAL GUARANTEE YOUR VOTE DAY. We are asking all group, blogs, union, churches and individuals who participate in this call to action to commit to two actions. 1) go online, by phone or in person and check with your local or state elections officials to make sure that you are STILL registered to vote. 2) text, phone or email your network of associates, readers or supporters and urge them to take the same 2 actions.

We feel that this is a matter of justice. Just recently:

In New Jersey, 300,000 people who thought that they were registered found out that they actually were not. Either they had been purged from the rolls or were never entered in the first place.

In Ohio, in 2006, 303,000 people were purged from the voting rolls in three major urban counties and in 2008 another 600,000 have been threatened.

In Virginia, the AFL-CIO has reported that Republican election's officials deliberately misled students to where to register and vote.

In Michigan, Republican County auditors has stated that those who have entered into home foreclosure would be stripped from the voting rolls.

In Wisconsin, the Republican Attorney General has sued to remove 20% of the voting population from the rolls, mainly in Milwaukee.

In New Mexico, a Native American person is 8 times more likely to be purged from the rolls as a Caucasian and a Hispanic person 5 times more likely.

So as you can tell, these are not isolated incidents. Make sure you know you are still registered and make sure your supporters/member/readers know that are still registered.

How can you help in this call to action? Endorse the project, k and r it here at DU, spread the word to others before tomorrow, and then on October 1st...take part in the two actions. Let's make sure this election is decided by the people and not by machines, manipulation or voter witch hunts!
