Forgive if a dup: Delta Force officer: US officials stopped plans to kill bin Laden

http://rawstory.com/news/2008/US_officials_stopped_plans_to_kill_1006.html

I didn't see this on the front page or at the top of any threads. I just wanted to be sure it got out, there is so much shit
going on I didn't want this to be missed. Pass it on.

After September 11, 2001, a team of elite Delta Force commandos was sent into Afghanistan with an assignment to find and kill Osama bin Laden at Tora Bora -- but that mission failed.

The commander of the Delta Force team has now written a book which tells what he says is the true story of what went wrong. He appeared anonymously on CBS's 60 Minutes on Sunday to summarize that story.

Bin Laden was known to be holed up at Tora Bora on a ridge with an elevation of 14,000 feet. The Delta Force team's initial plan was to come at him from the direction he'd least expect, climbing over the mountains at his back, but that plan wasn't approved by the higher-ups. Their second idea, to drop hundreds of landmines along the mountain passes to Pakistan to impede bin Laden's retreat and then bring in helicopters, was also turned down.

"How often does Delta come up with a tactical plan that's disapproved by higher headquarters?" CBS's Scott Pelley asked the commando leader.

"In my experience, in my five years at Delta, never before," he replied.

The only remaining option was a frontal assault by 50 US Delta Force members plus their Afghan guides -- and the Afghan warlord accompanying the commandos frankly told them, "I don't think you guys can handle it." A few million dollars from the CIA quickly secured his cooperation, but only to a degree.

5. It is tough to keep up, there are so many bombshells being dropped

We have known this for awhile. But, it needs to be exposed to the general public.

If this is true. Then some want mr Bin Laden to be on the loose, to manage to scare the hell out of most americans.. And it works, because every time this man have given a media blitz, it have been managing the Republicans "secure on national security". Even if it means that the man (who have been claimed to be behind the WTC attack) still are free as the bird I saw yesterday..

Some one want mr Bin Laden to be on the run.. And I would say, it is because mr Bin Laden are a good enemy. To scare the american public with.. It is like the picture of soviet soldiers in Berlin in 1945, or like the german soldiers in Stalingrad some years before the soviet was going into Berlin.. Anyway, the US was scared to death about the "enemy":. Even that this time around, I would guess your greatest enemy are not a cave man like mr Bin Laden, but rather your own president.. He is your largest enemy, he have screwed you so many times over now, and make a hawock of your economy, it would be decades before the US can take the high street again. If US ever would be taking the high street again..

And by the way. I would never have trusted a company who was been bribed to comply to what the Delta Force wanted to do. A bribed man, is an corrupt man. And in the case of the war lords.. They are taking money from every part in this game.. The US, the Brits, The Taliban, the Al-Qauda. The Pakistan's.. They all have to bribe the warlords to get what they want.. And it looks like the government or the intelligence agency's who are been ordered to pay them up front, have no clue if the money they get, is been used to fight the Taliban or the Al-QUADA. For everything we know. Some of this money can be given TO the Taliban and the Al-Qauda, to secure the warlords safety, if Taliban was ever to rise to power in Afghanistan again.. And at the looks at thing, it is not that sure if NATO want to send to many troops to Afghanistan anymore.. War is expensive, specially when you have to bribe the other parts, to get them to be peacefully.. When NATO is leaving what then?.. That is was the war lords are been thinking about. And the fact is that if the NATO alliance are leaving Afghanistan now. The Taliban is the only faction who are powerfully to unite some part of the country.. The other parts have been fighting them self for 30 year now, And it is just the oversight from NATO who are holding them together.. That, and the moral standing of mr Karzai, who still have an moral standing when it come to unity in the country.. Even that the afghans is very disappointed of him, before many of the promised from yesterday have never been coming into play.. The rebuild of the country are far from the best, and it is thousands of people in Kabul alone, who are living in dirth poor condition.. And it is no hope of rebuilding what was bombed down and out in the 1990s when the war lords was fighting over the ruble who once was the capital. Just to get the capital up and going would take a decade or more..And then to rebuild the other city-es, and villages.. And roads and everything that have been destroyed by 30 year of war..

What Afghans need more than everything else, are not bombs. But infrastructure, homes, schools, and security.. That is lacing today..

14. It isn't suprising at all. I believe we need to have a REAL 9/11 investigation

I hope the new Obama administration will seek to investigate to the fullest extent what did or did not happen on that day.

No preconceived notions. Just a honest, objective investigation.

It is long overdue.

And, you are right. Obama has been such a convienent boogey man.

I absolutely agree.. What happened, or what was not happening that day should at least after 8 year been known to the government, and then to the american public.. The official 9/11 commission was not what folk wanted them to be...

But I fear if the truth are coming, a lot of skeletons would be known.. And a lot of resentment would be waked up again, against the current leadership in the US.. If every single document about what happened at that day, and before it happened are been known.. Most of the neo-cons in US, and in Europe should face prison time.. Because they LET it happened.. They gambled, and won that "something" should happened to catapult them to power.. And after 9/11 everything was up to grasp for the neo-cons..

9. There have been other opportunities...
Even under Clinton. I think Steve Coll reported this in Ghost Wars.

Thanks for the info!

19. What was Bin Laden "wanted" for during the Clinton administration?

I'm curious. I remember this being a republican "talking point" when bush failed to capture him.
They can never answer it. Maybe you can.

"Elite Officer Recalls Bin Laden Hunt"

Oct. 5, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) Shortly after 9/11, the Pentagon ordered a top secret team of American commandos into Afghanistan with a single, simple order: kill Osama bin Laden. It was America's best chance to eliminate the leader of al Qaeda. The inside story of exactly what happened in that mission, and how close it came to its objective has never been told until now.

/snip/

The next option that Delta wanted to employ was to drop hundreds of landmines in the mountain passes that led to Pakistan, which was bin Laden’s escape route.

"First guy blows his leg off, everybody else stops. That allows aircraft overhead to find them. They see all these heat sources out there. Okay, there a big large group of Al Qaeda moving south. They can engage that," Fury explains.

But they didn't do that either, because Fury says that plan was also disapproved. He says he has "no idea" why.
