Here's a fascinating infographic from Newsweek in 1964, in the issue that marks LBJ's signing of the Civil Rights Act. Comparisons, analysis, ruminations, observations ... how far we have come, and how far we have not.

1. sure are some loaded questions
"take over white jobs"? well one could think that means that blacks want the same jobs as whites, or blacks are going to kick the whites out of their jobs and take over them. Very loaded, ambiguous question.

The sex questions are a riot, though. Whites are sure egotistical enough back then to think that blacks could hardly wait to marry and have sex with them!

3. funny you mentioned the take over white jobs from 1964 -
every time I hear Obama say he wants his daughters to have the same opportunity as your sons - I think of of the Republican voter and how that plays to them and that they will do most anything to prevent that from happening - that is how it became red state/blue state

It is not said directly but it is all over this elections everywhere - an Palin is to bring that base out along with the gay haters, and other single issues voters, and we have the pope's, etc who bring up the pro-choice but don't bring up the oxymoron of you can't be pro-choice and be pro-war

2. Glad you asked
This election is the new millennium version of the sixties civil rights with the nomination of our first Black candidate (of a major party) for president.

This is the highest office in the US (besides Paulson's) and the last leadership barrier to be broken. It has brought alot of hidden racism to the forefront and at the same time has deepened ties between those of different ethnicities and cultures that share the same hope and wholeness for America.
