1. Undoubtedly, yes

But none who admit it.

I'd love to be shown that my statement is incorrect. I just don't think there is anywhere in the U.S. that an atheist can be elected to any office, if the subject of religion has come up during the election. Has there been an election in the last 25 years where religion was not on the agenda? It even comes up around here in the local city council elections, and is a center-piece of school board elections.

8. Well, only one with the courage and honesty to admit it
I don't imagine there are any more true believers in Congress than there were during the Deist days of the founders.

They just know morons won't vote for them if they come out.

11. In the U.S.? Probably. In Chile, likely.
Michelle Bachelet calls herself an "agnostic." I hope that means what I think it means.

12. It's common enough in countries outside America
For instance, quite a number of British MPs are explicitly atheist. My MP, Evan Harris, is an official in the British Secular Society! David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary with a chance of being our next Prime Minister is atheist, and so is Nick Clegg, the leader of the LibDems. The Australian former PMs Gough Whitlam and Bob Hawke described themselves as 'agnostic' which usually means pretty much the same thing; as does the current New Zealand PM Helen Clark. No doubt there are plenty of others; in many Western countries, people simply don't know or care that much about the religious beliefs of their politicians.
