"A funny thing happened on the way to the smear...."
McCain tied to U.S. Council for World Freedom: Nazi collaborators and death squads in South America

As Sean Hannity, Rick Davis and John McCain step up their personal attacks on Barack Obama, a funny thing happened on the way to the smear fest. It seems John McCain has some prior associations he would rather not have revealed. I mean real ones. Check out this group.

GOP presidential nominee John McCain has past connections to a private group that supplied aid to guerrillas seeking to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua in the Iran-Contra affair.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe.

The council's founder, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain was launching his political career in Arizona. Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member in the group.

Oh, my. Playing the Guilt by Association Game doesn't seem to be a good idea for McCain with friends like those.

1. I'm not a Buddist but I find the following quote appropos:
"The Buddha said: "An evil man trying to harm a worthy man is like looking toward Heaven and spitting; the spittle will not befoul Heaven byt will return and befoul the one spittling. it is like throwing filth at someone while facing into the wind; the filth will not befoul anyone else but will return and befoul the one throwing. A worthy man cannot be harmed; a man's transgressions will surely destroy only himself."

time scale that we do. We shouldn't ever forget that "Karma works things out in strange ways."

(Buddha didn't say that. I did.)

3. "A worthy man cannot be harmed"
I think history has a number of counter-examples.

8. I agree. However, we might not have seen the complete picture.
Further, Buddha has been translated countless times before the idea reached us. Perhaps he meant that oftentimes, the slanderer will be harmed more than the victim. Look at Karl Rove. His reputation is about as bad as one could imagine. Karma is catching up with him.

7. Yes, it is. I recognize that in the short term, there are numerous
examples in history where "good men" are harmed by slander. However, we might not have seen the complete picture from beginning until the end.
