The Ugly Face of Racism

This billboard has appeared south of Mustion Creek on the west side of U.S. 63, according to the West Plains Quill (south central Missouri in the Ozark region). The paper said it was unable to determine who is responsible for the sign.

I grew up in Shannon County, Missouri, which is a very low-income area. I attended school with people who lived in one-room shacks with earthen floors and I recall that when an African-American man hitchhiked into Shannon County, the sheriff picked him up and drove him to the county line "for his own protection".

I have relatives there who are voting for Barack Obama and they wish they could show their support by putting an Obama-Biden sign in their yard, but they're afraid someone would retaliate against them.

To whomever created that sign - shame on you.

3. Yep, it's going to get uglier and uglier....

honestly, I was afraid to put up a sign where I am as well (a fairly rural, very red part of NC).

They're appealing to the racists and religious nutjobs (often one and the same), but there is a third element I haven't quite been able to figure out.

My ex-husband isn't a racist, nor is he overtly religious (though the Catholic upbringing never goes away and he's a pretty moralistic type).

He listens to Limbaugh though. I can't understand what was within his personality that allowed the Limbaugh element to take hold and him go from listening to him "because he's funny" to listening to him because he has the facts.

There is a cult mentality thing going on. Fascinating, but scary.

And, being the strong, brave souls they are, proud of their accomplishments, they left their names... oh, wait... they didn't???

So, how is this any different that those that came to town in the still of the night, with white pointy hats and their faces covered?

It isn't.

And yet, despite all this desperation, Obama is still winning. Eventually, good overcomes evil, sometimes it just takes a few years.
