Stock Market metaphor for today: "Das Boot"

If you've seen the movie, you'll remember a scene where, after a depth charge attack, the boat is plunging out of control for the bottom. They blow air into the tanks to try to recover, but they're still going down. Ominous creaks and drips break the tense, hushed, abated breathing as bolts and rivets pop and leaks hiss and are fixed.

They all stand, sweating, staring at the depth gauge, waiting for the needle to stop going down...

Hopefully you all still have enough sense to have a whiff of humor about this, but if I've offended, I apologize for this, my first ethical transgression. (Hey, we're all in unfamiliar territory here, whether we know it or not...)

Meanwhile, go to your record stash and pull out Steely Dan's "Black Friday" for tomorrow's soundtrack, and curse the ingrates who didn't allow a market holiday for Columbus Day.
