4. Good, but timing would be better after the election!
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 10:46 AM by Democat
Good news, but 30 days from now would be better timing for the announcement.

Gives the right wing more culture war to make their voters excited.

Before the predictable "why couldn't have this waited?" posts kicked in.

This is equality. Equality shouldn't come about on what is perceived political expediency.

:eyes:

Equality is progressive, and there is never a bad time to advance equality in America.

Gay people have been told for YEARS to wait until there is a convenient time to advance their full civil rights. Fuck that noise. We're not waiting anymore, and if you were a true progressive, you would join us.

17. If it were a matter of "good timing," women would still not have the vote
And people of color would have few rights.

Let's face it, there's never a good time for change...it has to happen when it does.

If we have always have to sacrifice basic rights for better timing, then we're more fucked up than I previously assumed.

32. We need to win this election above all else if anyone wants to keep their rights!
Anything that motivates the right wing to vote in greater numbers right before the election is a concern.

The Supreme Court will make decisions that will affect gays, lesbians, black americans, white americans, poor people around the world, and many other people for the next 50 years. If the Republicans are able to steal this election, they can replace two or three justices with young right wing activists, who will never support gay rights or any other rights that don't come from the bible or their corporate masters.

I know there are people on DU who think that Obama should proudly march in a gay rights parade two days before the election, regardless of whether it costs him the election by losing certain conservative states - just to prove that he is willing to stand up for what he believes in. I prefer a strategy of doing what is needed to win the election first, then doing what we need to do to make the world a better place after we are in power.

All I said was, and I stand by the statement - releasing this positive ruling one day after Obama wins the election would be better than releasing it 30 days before the election. I don't expect everyone to agree, of course.

43. If you lose this election you lose the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is the final line of defense on civil rights.

The most important thing is to keep our eyes on the Supreme Court and make sure that Obama is the one who appoints the next group of judges.

There is no reason to keep arguing this as it is an issue out of our control and it's already happened.

46. It won't be gay people's fault if we lose this election. Ok?
That is all I'm saying.

Those of you who want to blame the gays for every Democratic election defeat are ignoring the greater issues our party has with winning elections. LBJ signed the civil rights act in an election year and won 486 electoral votes. Democratic candidates can support full equality for all citizens AND win elections at the same time, if they go about it the right way.

54. I don't expect lawsuits and Supreme Courts to coordinate their decisions based on election cycles.
So, saying that it would be better if it were a few weeks later, makes no sense to me.

It's just a way for some people to try to take away the sheen of this amazing victory.

31. "Just like NJ cost us the 2006 election, huh?
Get over your selfishness. NOTHING is more important than equal civil rights for ALL Americans. Our whole society is underpinned by this. There is NEVER a "good" political time to ask for rights, so they must be demanded. Something both Dr. King and the Iron-Jawed Angels understood. Be courageous, like they were.

"Rights delayed are rights denied."

44. Let's be clear:
Are you saying that gay people shouldn't be around DU or that we shouldn't vote Democratic?

Maybe we shouldn't share your planet with people that are so obviously superior to us?

If California and Florida aren't enough to make you troglodytes happy, then another month won't make you any happier.

Every one of the bans is unconstitutional. There is no reasoning other than religion to deny marriage rights to same-sex couples.

I'm in Waterbury, CT and the paper here - Republican-American - gets those pretty frequently. Thankfully, there are plenty of sane, rational LTTE's to balance out the right-wing editorials and other letters & commentaries.

53. President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in an ELECTION year
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 03:46 AM by socialdemocrat1981
He knew it would cost him votes -he predicted that Democrats would perform poorly in the South. But he placed principles over pragmatism and was prepared to wear the electoral consequences for doing what was right.

If the world waited until the time was perfect before acting, we'd never get anything done.
