Yard Sign Thief Caught in the Act!
From the Greeley Daily Tribune, October 10 online edition:

As the election season continues to heat up, a Greeley man was jailed overnight Thursday, accused of stealing dozens of election signs of “people I disagree with.”

The suspect, in the Weld County Jail this morning on $2,000 bond, is Matthew Grieser, 32, and is accused of stealing 28 Democratic yard signs along West 4th Street. He also told police the signs were on city property, so he felt he had the right to remove them.

A Greeley police officer on patrol about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, saw a pickup parked in the 3700 block of 4th Street. That area has a greenbelt separated a fence along some gravel pits. The greenbelt has been a popular place, with both parties using it to display yard signs.

The police officer reported she saw a man running from the roadside to the pickup, and she stopped the vehicle from leaving. She contacted Grieser and found 28 yard signs in the back of his pickup.

Greeley police spokesman Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said only Democratic signs were in the pickup: seven Betsy Markey signs, three Mark Udall, six Debbie Pilch, two Jim Reisberg, one Barack Obama, eight Pierre DeMilt and one Bill Williams sign.

Grieser was arrested on misdemeanor theft charges and booked into the Weld County Jail. The value of the signs ranged from $8 to $10 each, Tymkowych said.

7. If the signs were placed on public property, why is that not littering?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 02:23 PM by Cronus Protagonist
If it is not, I have a few signs I'd like to put up on public property. And if it is, then he should be commended for cleaning the place up. :)

12. Here nobody can remove a sign unless on THEIR property
Only authorized city employees can remove political signs or other signs from right of ways.

17. I once painted over a sign on city property
That can't be illegal, can it? If the sign is not owned by the city and is therefore trash... that is.

32. You need to check your city ordinance.
Most likely, they could prosecute for defacing even if you did that because it was city property you were on.

Your only safety is that no one knows you did it.

35. hmmmm but I only defaced the trash I found lying on city property
It wasn't owned by the city. I'm thinking perhaps only the owner of the trash could complain, but then again, he would also then have to accept a fine for throwing trash on public property.

AFAIC, political signs should ONLY be on private property, with the consent of the owner or tenant.

37. City ordinances or state laws dictate what is permissable.
Some locations don't have any prohibition on signs in the right of way. They shouldn't be there but if the local jurisdiction doesn't have anything then all bets are off.

43. That is where the local media provides the information.
AND it is the responsibility of all political campaigns to know the applicable laws that they must follow.

Last year during a municipal election we provided instructions of what was permissible vs not permissible both with the ordinance and two pictures showing the difference with every sign that was handed out.

29. Poor pathitic idiot.
They are thinking of having a fourth child while unable to afford health insurance, getting a form of health insurance through a faith based organization. Don't want government regulation/interference on health insurance issues and is a conservative thus he is against Obama and for mccain.

Lets see, he wants free insurance and benefits without any interference or regulating, while he continues to have more children than he cannot afford. Think what the RW would be saying if this man was Black or Latino. :eyes:

22. At what monetary value does the crime become a felony?
At $8-10 each he was caught with around $2000-2500 worth of stolen merchandise. A felony conviction would take away the asshole's right to vote.

Fair is fair.

34. $1500 is the felony threshold in most places 20 years ago. i dunno now.
But this is a Federal election tampering crime if you have a prosecutor who is willing to be a real patriot.

44. Ah, there's the rub!
The DA in Greeley (Weld County) is Republican Ken Buck. Mr.Buck famously spent more than $300,000 prosecuting a voter for wrapping a dried dog poop in campaign mailer from Marilyn Musgrave and then leaving that wrapped goodie outside the door of Musgrave's office; this was done in response to the Musgrave campaign's failure to heed the voter's repeated requests to be removed from their mailing list. DA Buck had been Musgrave's campaign chairman, and is said to aspire (someday) to the seat she now holds. Anyway, it took the jury very little time to return a verdict of "not guilty," much to no one's surprise. Same DA also helped to engineer the election of a bizarrely unqualified nutcase to the position of mayor, to replace the sitting Republican mayor who had displeased Buck and his cronies by suggesting that immigrants are people and need to be treated with respect. The new mayor, Buck's good buddy, recently made national news when he threw a 15-year-old kid to the ground for riding a motor bike in a way the mayor didn't like; kid's family got a restraining order on the mayor, Buck turned the investigation over to another town's Republican DA and, whaddya know?!, no charges were brought against the mayor.

All this by way of saying that this current miscreant probably doesn't have much to worry about from DA Buck.

And now you know why I tend to snort every time I hear "small town values".
