Of course Republicans want "tougher attacks" from McCain. We wanted Obama to be tougher, too. You always want your guy to fight. As Bill Mahr said on the Daily Show after the first debate, "Our boy needs to be a little more forceful, don't you think? I mean, don't you think he needs to jab a little more?"

The (subtle) difference is that Democrats generally want to hammer McCain on his record, while Republicans generally don't care what McCain says, as long as it's negative.
