Dutchess has more Democrats for the first time in many years

Dutchess County (New York, 2hrs north of NYC) has more registered Democrats than Republicans for the first time in decades, and the number of Democrats keeps growing. As of this afternoon (10/10/08), 53,470 people registered as Democrats — about 379 more than registered Republicans, according to Democratic elections Commissioner Fran Knapp.

About 53,091 people registered as Republicans. The next largest group was 44,045 registered independents, who did not choose any party.
The county has about 164,000 registered voters.

“I have been waiting for this day for almost 30 years,” Knapp said. “I'm truly ecstatic that the Democrats are now the majority party in Dutchess County. I believe this bodes well for our candidates this year.”

Republican elections Commissioner David Gamache pointed out Thomas Jefferson founded the Democratic Party in 1792 before the Republican Party was founded in the early 1850s.

Voter registration is still not over, Gamache said.

“What really is important is who votes,” Gamache said. “We’ll see what happens.” <-- wink, wink Diebold-speak

“It is what it is,” Gamache said. “It’s a presidential year.”
