College Rules - Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC
Excerpts - Dress Code:
•Sideburns should not extend past the middle of the ear. Men are expected to remain clean-shaven.
•Sweaters should show shirt collar & tie knot (no sweatshirts)
•Sunday: Coat, tie, & dress shirt
•For women: All dresses, skirts, pants, and shirts must be loose-fitting, having a minimum of three inches of ease at bust and hips. An informal way to measure ease is to stand up straight and pinch the loose fabric on both sides of the hips or at the bust line. Without stretching the fabric, there should be at least a 3/4-inch fold of fabric on both sides.
•Brand Restrictions: Abercrombie & Fitch and its subsidiary Hollister have shown an unusual degree of antagonism to the name of Christ and an unusual display of wickedness in their promotions. In protest, articles displaying their logos are not acceptable to be worn, carried, or displayed (even if covered or masked in some way

From residence hall life:
•For the sake of accountability, students must "check out" when they leave the campus. Students gradually acquire more freedom in this area as they become upperclassmen.
•Students are required to keep their rooms clean and neat. Rooms are inspected daily.
•All wireless Internet access that bypasses the BJU filters is prohibited. This includes accessing the Internet via cellular phone services (e.g., TMobile, Sprint, Verizon, etc.) and WiMax.
•Music must be compatible with the University's music standards: New Age, jazz, rock, and country music is not permitted. Contemporary Christian music is not permitted (e.g., Michael W. Smith, Stephen Curtis Chapman, WOW Worship, and so forth).
•Residence hall students may not watch videos above a G rating when visiting homes in town and may not attend movie theaters

Bush spoke here in 2000. McCain criticized him. During the primary, McCain said he would consider an invitation. Ron Paul spoke there this year.

I want to stay well away from there.

3. How about that interracial dating ban?
I think they lifted it after the media firestorm in 2000, but then quietly added a new rule after the media coverage blew over: you would need parental permission to date outside of your race.

5. Jesus and the Twelve would be busted there immediately
That isn't the Good News of the Gospel -- it's superstition thick with right-wing culture war icing on top.

6. So what?
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 09:02 AM by bertha katzenengel
Do we balk when our candidates speak at private universities?

On edit: And who cares what their rules are? I'm sure students attend by choice.

7. They can certainly have any beliefs they want. However,

when a candidate speaks there, I think they tacitly endorse those beliefs. I realize every little rule might not be okay with a candidate, however BJU is known for these beliefs and they are major.

"BJU was widely known for banning interracial dating. In 1981, the school asked the Reagan administration to award it tax-exempt status even though it practiced racial discrimination. The Reaganites said yes, but subsequent protests queered the deal. And Bob Jones University's bigotry extended beyond race to religion, particularly Catholicism. In the 1980s, the former head of the school, Bob Jones Jr, claimed that "all the popes are demon-possessed." He called John Paul II "the greatest danger we face today." He maintained that "the papacy is the religion of Antichrist and is a satanic system." And like father, like son, Bob Jones III, the school's president since 1971, called John Paul the Antichrist. In 1987, when John Paul II visited Columbia, South Carolina, Jones III said he would rather "speak to the devil himself" than with the Pontiff. In 2000--shortly after Bush spoke at BJU--New York Times columnist Bob Herbert asked the school if it had ever repudiated the Jones' anti-Catholic statements. The answer: no."

I have a twee bit of trouble with somone condoning these beliefs.
