Word of advice - avoid posting politics on a sports board
I went to the CBS sports website on my lunchbreak to have some downtime, and I saw a post on a message board that had the words "liberal scum." So, I dipped my toe in the water, and soon I found myself diving in.

My God, the ignorance is just astounding. I posted three times, and with that, I said "enough." You know you have reached your wits end when posters are proclaiming what a great man Joseph McCarthy was.

If all sports fans are this ignorant, then maybe I need to pursue another hobby. It was just so pathetic.

Your average right winger is very similar to your average internet troll
they both can drive the good people from a message board and will actively work to that end. So it's not uncommon to see wingnuts dominate any non-political message board that allows political talk.

2. Hard-core sports fans tend to be right-wingers
So do gearheads — or, so I discovered a few years ago.

3. Try posting in a Cigar Site
Even though cigars are usually equated with pompous a-holes like Limbaugh, I do enjoy an occasional stogie. I belong to some cigar forums, try their political forums. They're about 98% right wing.

Scale model building. One of the most popular sites I visit is for builders of scale-model military vehicles and dioramas.

The board strictly bans any political posts, for exactly the reasons mentioned above.

That doesn't stop the more determined bungholes. Once, some yahoo posted a rant calling Democrats "socialist morons" or words to that effect.

One of the board's most popular and prolific posters, a Brit, fired back that he was a lifelong capital-S Socialist, And maybe Mr. GOP should actually learn something about the subject before shooting off his keyboard and showing his ignorance.

From time to time, a very touchy subject comes up on the board, in General Discussion where there is a bit more latitude.

For various reasons that will bore non-modelers to death, many of the subjects we build are German from WWII. That stuff is just inherently fascinating--Tiger tanks, Panther tanks, weird stuff like the Maus, etc.

Occasionally this starts a debate about the morality of building "Nazi tanks." (Tanks, of course, have no ideologies and if captured by the other side, will happily blast away at their former owners.)

A veteran of the current Iraq war really stirred the pot in one of those discussions. From memory: "I'm sure not all German soldiers supported Hitler's policies. Any more than every G.I. in Iraq supports George W. Bush. And I can guarantee you they don't. I was there." Etc.
