Is free parking a good idea?
Seems to me that it just encourages driving.

I thought we were supposed to be trying to wean ourselves from oil.

Or is that just an ideal we're paying lip service to?

1. Is asking silly, pointless questions a good idea?
Seems to me that it just encourages nonsense threads with no substantive discussion or value.

3. Is it pointless to wonder if we're promoting too much consumption of fossil fuels?

2. It probably depends on how much parking is available
If there's no place to park, it doesn't really matter if it's free.

4. I always liked landing on Free Parking.
The way our rules worked, you would collect the fines that all the players had to pay.

5. Better to have free parking, and higher fuel taxes
than making everyone pay for parking but keeping fuel taxes low. It's the burnt fuel that's the problem, not the amount of room a parked car (which could be an electric car) takes up.

6. Two people use different means to get to the same destination
Why should the person who drives get the extra benefit?

8. Why should someone who parks pay a tax, when it's the fuel that's the problem?
The problem is the carbon dioxide; so tax the problem (the carbon-containing fuel), not a side-effect. What are you going to do, install parking meters on all roadside parking places? Why should someone who drives a fuel-efficient car 2 miles to a mall pay the same fee as someone who drives a gas guzzler 15 miles to the same mall?

9. If you're using a car to go 2 miles you're a big part of the problem
Unless you're going to the mall to buy a major appliance.

7. Depends on the house rules.
Some people play where you get $20 bucks for landing on it. Others put all the Community Chest money under it. If you play with no cash, it's kind of a bummer to land on it because you can't buy any properties or draw cards.
