Reading reports of Palin begging fundraisers ”‘Don’t make me say ‘Joe the Plumber’ please”, some Americans felt a twinge of sympathy -- but it was brief: she promptly resumed yattering his name

This excites some Republican voters -- namely, those who enjoy joining plunger-waving mobs -- but as far as researchers can tell, mentioning Joe has earned McCain only one definite vote: the grateful owner of domain name joetheplumber, now marketing T-shirts and fighting off buy-out offers

The excitement seems too limited to end America’s economic downturn: Roto-Rooter, for example, remains noncommittal about whether the company could sponsor Joe’s licensing

McCain’s platform, meanwhile, is focussed increasingly on his defense of Joe the Plumber -- though it is unclear whether McCain's Joe strategy means

(1) as President he will resolutely stand by anyone whom he happens to mention 26 times in a debate
(2) he hopes Americans agree with Joe’s opposition to social security and unwillingness to pay local taxes
(3) he thinks voters with suspended licenses may swing the election
(4) he expects voters obsessed with Joe the Plumber to forget J. Gordon the Plumber
or
(5) he just really can’t afford to lose even one known vote in Ohio
