Some asshole STOLE my NY Times from the sidewalk again this morning.
This happens about 4-5 times a month. We usually call the NYTs circulation number and get another paper delivered or get credit. Until today, I was not absolutely sure the paper was being stolen.

We know it was stolen this morning because it was there on the sidewalk when my wife left to walk the dog (letting me sleep in). When I got up and went out for the papers, the Greenville Daily Grunt was there, but no NYTs.

Our theory is that someone "subscribes" to the New York Times by picking up one every morning somewhere in the neighborhood. But I would think our house would be bypassed because there is so much glass in the front and the house is very close to the street.

I just talked to the NYTs circulation department and they are going to have the carrier contact me. Meanwhile, I'll start taking my morning coffee in a semi-dark front room watching for the rat-bastard who is stealing my New York Times.

3. I saw a report on some early show the other day showing a dog caught on security cam
stealing newspapers! Didn't notice where, though...:D

Is this happening before sunrise? I can loan you some night-vision goggles :-)

7. Why not do the Scotch Bonnet pepper routine DUers have suggested for Obama signs?
Set an old one out early w/the concoction coating.

16. One of my son's paper route customers had theirs stolen
periodically after afternoon delivery. DH and I staked out the house and found a 3-4 yr old grandchild of their neighbor was riding their little trike over and taking it.

18. I saw that too. The video of that dog was funny.
Made me wonder what his owners thought if he brought it home. Maybe he just had fun shredding it.

6. Are You Sure It Wasn't Joe The Plumber?
Hey, you never know. After all Joe doesn't pay his taxes like hard working Americans do. I'm pretty sure Joe doesn't accurately report his wages and earnings either so I wouldn't put it past him to take your NYT. Some example of a working class American he is, wants all the wonderful things this great nation has to offer including a strong national defense, but doesn't think he has to pay for them like the rest of us. I'm pretty sure he has your paper, the cheap bastard!

8. A solution that worked for us
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 12:38 PM by SOS
We live in an apartment. Someone was stealing our NYT from in front of our door.
So one day I got a replacement copy.
I bored a hole into the center of the fold.
Then I attached a pencil to some string and placed the pencil into the fold.
The string went through the hole, under our door and was attached to a spoon.
Got up really early the next day and switched the new paper with the booby-trapped version.

Sure enough, next morning the spoon went dashing across the floor! The string and pencil contraption stopped them cold. The paper was ripped from her hands.
I ran to the door and caught our sleazy neighbor running down the hall.
We never lost another paper and she moved out soon thereafter.

A house might require some adjustments to the trap. Tie the string to a nearby tree, perhaps.

Anyway, it was really fun catching this annoying twit.

11. Ah-ha! Your decoy gives me an idea, SOS.
We use the empty NYTs bags (blue) for poop sacks when we walk Nick. I'll start carefully re-bagging an old paper with some dog poop and switching that with the new paper every morning. Sooner or later they will steal what looks like a new NYT's just to get home (or work, or .. LOL .. Starbucks!) to open up the bag to a NYT's copiously smeared with dog shit.

There are a few logistical details to work out, like how long can I keep the shit-stained decoy on my side patio before throwing it away and re-bagging another old paper .. etc. I will work that out.

Fortunately, I saved last Sunday's NYTs. So tomorrow morning will be the first day of Operation Shit Sack.

Thank you for the decoy idea!

15. I just prepared tomorrow's decoy .. a shot across the thief's bow (figuratively)
I used a #44 Magnum Marker to write a message on my NYTs from last Sunday:

STEAL MY PAPER AGAIN AND I'LL HAVE A RUDE SURPRISE FOR YOU! FUCKING THIEF!

I'll leave decoys with that message until the paper is stolen again. Then the dog-shit-smeared decoy goes out.

22. That's gonna get 'em
They will be angry about getting last week's paper and your note will let them have it.
Although I must say that Operation Shit Sack had me laughing for about five minutes.
Welcome to Starbucks, stinky!

Please come back to this thread when the jerk falls for the trap.
I'd love to hear how it turns out.
Hopefully after they get the decoy they'll leave you alone for good.

Good luck!

14. It was Sarah Palin.
She's upset b/c her handlers are keeping her away from all media to avoid "depressing" her-- but you know our Sarah, she just HAS to read "all the papers" or her day isn't complete!
