Jamaica puzzled by theft of beach
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7678379.stm
<snip>
Questions are being asked in Jamaica about a police investigation into the theft of hundreds of tons of sand from a beach on the island's north coast.

It was discovered in July that 500 truck-loads had been removed outside a planned resort at Coral Spring beach.

Detectives say people in the tourism sector could be suspects, because a good beach is seen as a valuable asset to hotels on the Caribbean island.

But a lack of arrests made since July have led to criticism of the police.
-------------
Big cover up here. Word is that another set of hoteliers stole it but they have friends in high places.
The morons haven't given any thought to the environmental consequences.

7. Of Course, the Sea Can Take That Much in a Single Storm
Though it usually gives it back eventually.

This was the original report months ago

This is the Thursday report which reached BBC today
http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20081016t000000-0500_141397_obs_opposition_warns_of_cover_up_.asp

Let me add that the two main newspapers are owned by hotel interests so it's not odd to see one accusing others of stealing the sand.

12. Damn.
I have never heard of someone stealing a beach.

I heard they're charging us to have sand moved around in the Middle East, I wonder if it's anything similar (to benefit resort towns)?
