Gramps won the nomination by default...being the lone candidate standing while the others blew each other away. His support was never strong with the "base"...and it was slipping as even after he locked away the nomination he only drew 75% of the vote in the remaining primaries and registration was down in many key areas. Also, in the weeks running up to the RNC, Gramps was starting to run low on cash...he needed something/anything to pump up the coffers. So he sold out.
The first step was to bring in Steve Schmidt (Karl Rove, Jr.) to crank up the slime and distractions. With his poll numbers stagnant in the low 40's, he needed a boost and by picking Palin, he gambled she would solidify the fundies and possibly steal some PUMAs (even though we know there weren't many). This move has the hands of Rove and Gingrich all over it...and hoped that she would play the "pitbull with lipstick". The problem was they didn't realize how dumb she is...she became a strain on resources, not an asset.
Gramps has failed to energize enough of his base to maintain any lead over Senator Obama...and we've seen Palin turn into a liability. The slime campaign hasn't taken hold either...Ayers hasn't stuck and, other than Faux, the corporate media hasn't bought on like they did to past efforts...it's gotta be frustrating. The only weapon left is to supress the vote...cage voters, robo-call them into numbness and intimidate minorities.
These are cornered animals...we must be very alert but must not loose control.
