Obama visit to North Carolina restaurant stirs mixed emotions

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - There was a sharp exchange among patrons during Barack Obama’s visit to a barbecue restaurant on Sunday, highlighting the strong emotions the U.S. presidential race is stirring in the final weeks of the campaign.

Obama stopped by Cape Fear BBQ in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to pick up some chicken, collards and baked beans and court voters in this traditionally Republican state.

Some patrons cheered his arrival while others looked on with curiosity and surprise. One woman yelled, “Socialist, Socialist, Socialist — get out of here.” Obama was across the room at the time and did not appear to hear Diane Fanning, 54, who was among several patrons who had just come by after services at the local Presbyterian church. She said she was annoyed that the Illinois senator had stopped in at the restaurant that she regularly visits.

Obama supporter Cecelia Hayslip, 61, responded to Fanning’s comments by saying, “At least he’s not a warmonger.”

Lenox Bramble, 76, isn’t an Obama supporter but he also was bothered by Fanning’s comment. “Be civil, be courteous,” he said.

Obama later walked over to Fanning’s table and extended his hand to her but she did not shake it.

16. Just like nasty little John McCain
His supporters are stupid and backwards. It is nice to know that there are some normal people in the town.
The polite man should come over to our side. He belongs with us.

The scumbags running his campaign and Palin though...they wouldn't bring her out in public places like that...for a reason.

36. McCain did shake Obama's hand after the second debate.
It wasn't on most TV cameras and Wolf Blitzer didn't see it, which led to the misunderstanding.

Beyond the official policies of Wal Mart Inc, that is. They probably put subliminal conservative hate messages behind the music system (Country, most probably) playing in their store.

13. exactly
I hope she doesn't plan to use medicaid, either.

I also hope she doesn't want to drive on public roads and highways, or send her kids to public schools or universities.

the total irony, of course, is that this woman works at Wal Mart and thinks republican economic policies are good for her. the stupidity is astounding. although he won't say it, she is also a prime example of the "bitter white lower class" Obama spoke about - honestly - which is why he was attacked by Fox news, etc. they can't let truth interfere with their hate fests.

Wal-Mart Wants Republican President

Is Wal-Mart Making Its Employees Vote Republican?
By American News Project

http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080901/wal-mart_video

"Earlier this month the Wall Street Journal reported that Wal-Mart, fearful of mandatory labor laws, is politically bullying its employees to vote Republican in this year's election. The controversial company has been under fire for preventing employees to unionize, driving out local businesses and other particularly egregious policies and practices for years. Wal-Mart claims that high union dues would prevent it from hiring new employees, lead to greater economic hardships for existing workers and increase costs for the consumer"

12. I got a bunch of this shit yesterday blockwalking
RUDE, ILL-MANNERED FUCKERS!

I was in a super red precinct trying to get to the voters we thought might be Dems, and we got a lot of surprises.

One old fart took our trifold, looked at it, then threw it at our feet.

Another group of bubbas took the literature then laughed as we walked away, screaming "What is America coming to?"

One woman with about five children said "Oh, no. I support the party of family values," and went on to rant about the partial birth bill and health care for unborn fetuses. I figured we weren't going to get her vote and said to hell with it and said, "I hope you have a lot of money for health care in case your kids get sick. And I hope you have already started saving now to send them to college. You do want them to go to college, right?" And then walked off.

MEAN, NASTY PEOPLE!!

20. I like this bit: Strong emotions being stirred by who? Nobody apparently.

" . . . highlighting the strong emotions the U.S. presidential race is stirring in the final weeks of the campaign."

Once again, the writer is impying this sort of thing just happens during a campaign.

It's like "mistakes were made." No one actually said anything to cause little old racist ladies to be calling Obama "socialist" or people at Palin rallies to yell "kill him" or ACORN offices to be vandalized or tires to be slashed.

It all just happens. . . both sides do it, etc.

That said, I have literally been stunned by the people I have met who are vehement Obama supporters that I never would have suspected. Don't forget, there were more people in that restaurant that were thrilled to meet him, or at least respectful. I'm sure one or two of those good ol'boys had to take their hats off to his cajones.
