I, my wife and two children have been living in the USA now for about 10 years and about 6 years as permanent residents (Green Card holders). Before you can apply for citizenship the rule states that you have to have been a permanent resident for 5 years. I asked my wife earlier this year whether she wanted to apply for citizenship and she said no, she did not want to become a citizen under George Bush or any other republican for that matter (she said she couldn’t feel the pride required to become a citizen under a country with a corrupt election system, with a government that tortures people and starts wars unprovoked etc, etc).
I was disappointed and sad that she made that decision but could see her point (and we live in a red state so we thought, well, our vote would make no difference anyway). My wife has often talked about leaving the USA during the Bush years (we are lucky that we could have moved to Canada or the UK if we chose). When we moved here the country was glowing after 6 years of a Clinton presidency and we settled in very well until the Supreme Court stepped in and awarded the presidency to Bush. Even during the first 9 months of 2001 we didn’t pay much attention to politics and then 9/11 happened and, well, you know the rest.
Anyway, last week I was delighted when she said that if Barack Obama is elected President then she would want to become a citizen. We are so excited about the prospect of a Democratic President- it will renew our belief in the United states of America as a great country and make us proud to call ourselves CITIZENS.
