I was stuck in traffic today behind an SUV with several bumper stickers. One had an anti-tax message and another was a McCain/Palin sticker with “Country First” across the top of it.
It was then I had the revelation that even McCain’s campaign slogan is a lie (no doubt others have also had this revelation).
The U.S. is in trouble. We are trillions of dollars in debt and a large part of that debt is owed to countries that do not have especially warm feelings toward us. Our infrastructure is in dire need of repair, kids are falling further behind their peers in other countries because our schools are not working. Leaving Iraq will keep the debt from getting larger but the money we are spending there is borrowed so ending the war will not free up many funds to spend elsewhere.
If we want to pay down the debt and start fixing some of our problems, we just may have pay more.
It’s not that I enjoy paying taxes (especially given how much goes to the military and its contractors I’d feel much happier about them if they were paying for social systems like France has), but they are necessary and you can’t claim that you put your country first and then complain about paying to keep it going.
