HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama began his political career in Illinois, but his formative years were spent in Hawaii.
As a boy and a teenager, he was a student and star basketball player at Punahou School in Honolulu, Sacramento television news station KCRA reported.
Built in the 1800s, it is billed as the largest private school in the United States for kindergarten through 12th grade. The school has about 3,700 students. Tuition today is $16,765 per year.
