Woman paints Obama logo on her lawn



After the Barack Obama sign was stolen from her front yard, Shannon Bennett of Austin, Texas painted a more permanent one with 12 cans of spray-paint and her front lawn as the canvas.

“I just wanted to be able to say who I support, without being censored, which is how I felt when my sign was taken,” said Bennett.

She painted a large, red, white, and blue symbol in the front yard, using her old Obama sign as an inspiration.

“The signs cost money and it’s coming into my front yard and taking away my freedom of expression,” said Bennett.

She said she has not received any complaints from neighbors and the makeshift sign has been in the yard for a week.

“They might think it’s extreme, but I think it’s extreme to come into my yard and take something that belongs to me, so I wanted to express myself.”

Couple creates painting of Obama on their lawn

Thinking bigger is better, Ross and Lenox decided to use their artistic talents to create a 102-by-70-foot painting of Obama on their lawn based on the artwork of Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey .

Fairey created his “Hope” piece for the Obama campaign.

“We are feeling really hopeful at the end of the election,” the 52-year-old Ross said. “Let’s support all the people that are feeling this way.”

After borrowing a friend’s copy of the Fairey poster, the couple spent 10 days laying out the 7,000-square-foot grid and outlining the painting.

Then it was time to paint. The couple held a painting party at their home on Sunday, inviting 15 artist friends and Obama supporters to come “color by numbers” as Lenox, 47, called it.

They used a water-based athletic field paint. After more than seven hours, they still weren’t finished so Lenox and Ross completed the work on Monday afternoon.
