5. I never understood this.

People go by their middle names, or nicknames all the time. Isn't that what "Joe" is doing?

Now, if everyone calls him Sam, but he just said "Joe" to try and hide himself or something, that would be another thing.

Or, focus on the other aspects of his character that are lacking (not paying taxes, for one).

But I think it's kinda silly to say that's not his name, assuming that is what he mostly goes by.
