Conversation with my 11 year old last night
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 09:38 AM by Stuckinthebush
We were watching Rachel Maddow interview Obama. My daughter (also Rachel) asked me to pause the TIVO a number of times to ask questions.

Rachel: Why doesn't Obama come to Alabama during these last few days? I want to see him.

Me: Alabama is a solidly Republican state. Obama doesn't have much of a chance to get the 9 electoral votes here so his team chooses to spend their limited funds in states that are considered swing states.

Rachel: That's too bad. Why is Alabama so Republican?

Me: I don't have an easy answer for that, but it probably has to do with religion. Many of our neighbors feel that the Republican party best represents their Christian views.

Rachel: I don't get that.

Me: Me either.

Rachel: Why did we move here again?

Me; We are southerners, sweetie. Our families are from here. I was born in the South. You were born in the south. There is a lot about this area that is wonderful.

Rachel: Then maybe we can do something about the Republican thing.

THAT'S THE ATTITUDE!!!

11. Thanks!
I love the South. There are things that I don't like about it, but as a whole, it is a fine place.

I think we can change given time. Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia are fine examples of that change taking place.

12. Thank you...
I just allow her (and encourage her) to question.

If you let any child engage her or his brain, then I think the rest will follow naturally.

15. What a wonderful child you have!
And I agree with her about "the Republican thing." Living in neighboring Georgia, and being a native Southerner as well, I am a bit ashamed of the backwardness of my home, but "times they are a-changin'."

:patriot:

The United States is a LIBERAL Country.
