He seems to have cut off the combover, but I really don't know if that qualifies. Anything? Anybody? At all?

1. He hasn't vomited all over himself in public. That has to count for something.

6. That's good enough to 'win' a debate with Biden.

4. They've done a lot of stuff "right"
With an execrable platform and a pathetically under-qualified VP candidate they're making a viable run for the presidency.

They're playing dirty and doing pretty damn well at it.

5. He seems to be able to dress himself adequately.
Now if he doesn't dress himself (likely), then there's at least one person in his campaign who's doing something right.

7. I clicked here because I knew I'd think of something by the time I started typing
...but I got nothing.

I've never seen a campaign take so many wrong turns. Sometimes it seemed to be run by rank amatuers who couldn't get a homecoming queen elected.

I have to assume McCain regularly pulls rank on his staff, making gut decisions that sabotage his own campaign.

9. I'm still stumped. Mind you, I'm not complaining
Given how well-trained United Statesians are towards the kneejerk fear response these days, if he'd gotten a single thing right, he'd probably be winning.

That's all I can think of.

11. Yes.
They have successfully played the fears and smears card over and over. Imagine how many people would vote for Obama if they didn't still think he wasn't born in Hawaii, or he is a Muslim, or he is a Socialist/Communist/Marxist. Imagine how many people who would have otherwise been able to hear what Barack has to say, but they automatically are closed-minded because he "is the most liberal person in the Senate, or ever to run for President". They will not give him the time of day because he "palled around with terrorists" and "hates Israel" and "went to a racist, America-hating church".

That is by all means the short list, but its enough to see that, no matter the statement made, and no matter how many times it's debunked, once it is said, and once it is put out there, that is enough to plant the seed of doubt. And if enough seeds are planted, truth or not, it will affect a person's thoughts and emotions. And they know it. And have no quams with abusing it.

12. Conversely, the negative campaigning has turned off millions of moderate
independents and a goodly number of Republicans (Colin Powell, f'rinstance). As McCain was ahead as of his convention, I'd say that fears and smears aren't working so well. If he'd just stuck to his (completely fake, I know) good-guy maverick image and actually sold something positive about his own ticket, he'd probably be landsliding rather than (knock on wood) getting ready to be landslid.

13. Thank God
I really hope people are starting to wake up, and not be swayed by this anymore
