Behind the Scenes on MSNBC.... The audio was on during a breaking story

It makes you wonder what really goes on. You can tell she's getting the feed from him.

11. That's is the kind of chatter going on in the earpieces of TV hosts/newsreaders.
Very hard to concentrate and speak normally when this is in your ear.

I surmised there was cross-talk or noise in her earpiece.

30. Sometimes you can hear yourself with several seconds of delay.
Edited on Fri Dec-05-08 06:21 PM by Billy Burnett
Just try that sometime and see if you can speak normally. It's almost impossible. Takes a lot of practice tuning out the earpiece, but you have to pay attention not to ignore the guests and the producers. It can be very difficult at times.

16. This is not to the OP, but the thread in general............
have any of you worked on live TV? Or in a newsroom on deadline.

I can't listen to the link because I am a pathetic dial-up user, but in my experiences things can get very heated and swears can be used when things come down to the wire in news organizations and it is rarely taken personally afterwards.

With that said, I haven't heard the entire thing.

19. It's a video
He was yelling over a live desk anchor about a cutaway gone wrong. She managed to keep her patter going, but was clearly flummoxed. Occasionally, she'd look off camera out of the corner of her eye and you'd hear him blowing about "don't look this way, &#%@!!!" Dude was just begging to be unemployed.

22. my first surmise is that it is faked.
not that hard to dream up chatter to go with the video and rerecord over it. This is "break.com" after all, and half the videos are faked.

additionally, there's no way the producer chatter would go out over the air for that long without someone pulling the plug on it.

32. I would be surprised if it was real, MAINLY because it goes on for a very long time
there actually are people in the control room monitoring the feed. Even if, for some odd reason, everyone had fallen asleep in control, there would have been a blazing redline phone call from mgmt long before a minute or two had passed.

and, if this were real, we would have definitely known about it from some other source than break.com.

don't get me wrong, I enjoy break.com, and because I do, I know that a lot of people post fake videos, and the comments usually call it out as fake. They post real videos, too, but honestly, the whole thing is highly suspect to me.

37. If the producer is always an asshole like this, I could imagine someone not catching this real fast
"is his mic on?"

"nah, can't be"

"i'll check..."

"oops...hope that doesn't get out there."

in which case it would be due justice.

25. While in high school
I interned for an NBC affiliate in KC, I did both on air reporting, production, directing talent, and writing.

I also thought about a career in broadcast journalism and did a great deal of studying the really good live TV directors, including a behind the scenes look at the production of the Oscars broadcast.

There was never any cursing or foul language. Using any "extra" language like that would be frowned upon... because it takes time and distracts people. You don't have any extra time.

It's a very hard job, tracking backgrounds, multiple cameras, telling each camera person how to set up for the next shot and so on.

Very stressful. But everyone I dealt with was exceptionally professional.

To see or hear things like this and the Bill Orally "do it live" footage makes me think that things have changed a great deal since I witnessed it.

Sad really.

It's a fake. No director gives that many detailed instructions to on air talent, not if they expect the talent to read the prompter.

I agree with you.

Orally, otoh, was real. And shows the guy for the unprofessional jerk that he is. Not to mention that as a broadcaster, he should have known what the phrase "play it off" or "play us off" means.

38. Probably fake, but expresses a true sentiment about Contessa Brewer.
The daytime MSNBC line up calls for attractive women with room temperatur IQs and a complete lack of any political acumen.

Mika, Contessa, and Alex, to name three.
