If you don't drive a hybrid, you suck.
If you don't drive an American car, you suck.

American hybrids suck.

So basically, you suck.

68. bicycling and walking tend to work well in small towns though
so a major metro area is hardly a requirement for a non-automotive lifestyle.

74. Sometimes you live in another town, or tens of miles away
and in a region where the weather can be uncooperative. Economics drives this - through housing prices, job locations, stores. Life isn't a fairly tale.

75. Economics is just one of many factors that determine transportation choices
Generally, people prefer using cars to walking or biking.

You can have two nearly identical cities, where the only significant difference is the availability of parking.

In the city where parking is easy, more people will drive.

It has very little to do with economics, just personal preference.

6. I believe driving a very old economy car with good mileage
has a smaller OVERALL carbon footprint than driving a brand new ANYTHING, including a brand new hybrid. Nobody has to manufacture ANYTHING for me to drive my old 4-cylinder economy car. Especially since I rarely drive more than 3 or 4 times a month, and never more than 10 miles round trip. For long trips I take Amtrak.

40. That depends heavily on the car..
What really drives up insurance costs is age, driving record and type of car.

Young guy with poor driving record driving a sporty car is going to pay heavily, think frat boy in a new Mustang GT.

Older woman with good record driving even a high performance luxury sedan will be considerably lower, think soccer mom in an older Q45 or LS400.

66. We are driving a $900 car right now, we fit pretty handily into the "poor" category.
I don't have a clue what you're talking about here.

Newer cars are not automatically safer than older ones, it depends heavily on the particular car in question.

As I pointed out, an early 90's Q45 or LS400 will be considerably more safe than a brand new Mustang GT, when you put the likely driver into the equation the safety disparity becomes even more pronounced.

Auto safety is determined largely by the driver, a competent and safe driver makes even an older car more safe than an incompetent and unsafe driver in the latest car.

37. hubby drives a 2007 porsche.
he had a 98 vette which was a lemon. i have the hard top. i bought the car new and immediately ordered the hardtop. i can't drive a convertible here in the summer. i'm in phoenix and it gets up to 118. i only like having the top off when it's below 80. otherwise it's too hot for me.

100 cars? a typical man. lol. hubby has had many more cars than i have. i get attached to mine and drive them for a long time. before the miata i had a 97 toyota corolla which i bought in 97 with 14,000 miles on it. they wanted $13,000. i said "i'll give you $12,000". i drove it out of there. i kept it till late 2004 when i bought the miata. i thought of keeping it. actually right after i got the miata it rained so i took the corolla, but then she was just sitting there. she kept saying to me "please drive me, i was good to you for 7 years." finally i put an ad on the internet. i sold it to a nice young woman for $4,500. i'm sure she's still very happy with it.

when i bought the miata i figured i'd keep it 2 years and then i would want something bigger. i've had it for more than 4 years and can't imagine ever giving it up.

because i have the miata and he has the porsche, we need something a little bigger to do shopping. the tundra has 4 wheel drive. the road we live on is paved, but it was not when we first moved here. we have to drive up 2 steep hills. i did it with my corolla though. just last week we went up a road where he put it in 4 wheel.

I get wicked good mileage and just plowed through pretty deep-ass snow a couple hours ago. I buy American and have yet to have cause for regret.

65. I drive nothing.
I get a ride to and from work. The rest of the time it's the bus, the bike, or the boots.

70. I really suck
2001 Nissan Xterra. But I don't anybody on DU that would ride a bike in my neck of the woods today. Wind chill has pushed it below zero, and I've got snow and ice. I'm rural, but only 7 miles from town.
