Starting with the Reagan era, the new model to grow your business goes like this:

Step 1: Reduce jobs on the labor end and bump up productivity by handing those tasks to remaining employees.

Step 2: Go to the bank for a loan to buy out your competitor. Use your Step 1 trimming as evidence you can "run lean" for profitability and pay back.

Step 3: Get the loan, buyout someone. Eliminate duplicate jobs in support/admin and management positions.

Step 4: bonuses all around up top and pay off the stockholders to keep stock price high.

Step 5: look around for more jobs to be cut and tasks to be reassigned.

Step 6: go back to the bank to buy out your next competitor

Step 7-49: lather, rinse, repeat

We, the American people whose jobs would be cut in a heartbeat by these fuckers (and some whose gigs already have been), are now financing the latest round because these "businesses" have taken this cycle as far as it can go and the banks can't or won't fund it anymore.
