Oklahoma Mayor and a local pastor who advocates court-ordered “education programs” to “cure” gays

Anti-Gay Campaign Plotted For Oklahoma City

The Gossip-Boy web site has uncovered evidence of a major upcoming anti-gay campaign by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett and a local pastor who advocates court-ordered “education programs” to “cure” gay people.

According to James Miko and Wayne Fuller, Mayor Cornett plans to team up with Olivet Baptist Church pastor Steve Kern (OK State Rep. Sally Kern’s husband) to unleash a campaign to “rid the library system of all gay and lesbian materials, as well as those their church-based philosophies find objectionable.”

The planned anti-gay drive is reportedly part of Mayor Cornett’s longer-term strategy for the 2010 governor’s race. According to unnamed insiders, the Mayor hopes that by waging this campaign targeting gays and lesbians, he will gain the good graces of fundamentalist voters and “walk away a hero to certain people”:

...

Pro-gay advocates often suspect politicians of cynically expoiting anti-gay sentiment to further their political careers. We rarely have such a smoking gun as this one. And we also rarely get such a clear indication of the kind of “justice” some of our opponents envision if they had their way. To these people, re-education camps aren’t out of the question.

-----

This is the end goal of anti-gay religious organizations - the new improved "final solution" if you will...

2. Ugh. Here's the most offensive of the offensive parts:
Courts can force drug offenders into treatment centers and violent people into anger management. There’s no reason our courts can’t do that with homos.

I know there are bigots out there, but I'll admit to being stunned by this.

4. Yeah thats fairly repulsive... unfortunately many people think that way and just dont say it
out loud. Its almost like these people are literally stuck in the 1950s.

30. Why would they be in court in the first place?
It's not illegal to be gay (even if these people would wish that were so).

Seriously, how is the court going to order homosexuals to do anything if they're not in front of the bench to begin with?

Then again, logic has never been a religious wingnut's forte.

9. Assholes. Sounds like the anti-vaccine nuts that think us autistics need to be "cured"
So I know how much this shit hurts gay people. It's all the same thing, it's all genocidal bigotry hiding under the appearance of compassion, which is the worst for of bigotry.

These people are truly dangerous MFers and are part of the reason I'm no populist, Human Rights are not something that should be put up for a vote

You don't know squat about OU...diversity, diversity, diversity in a sea of madness.
There's enough idiocy in that article to pick at without bringing our football team (and by extension, the University and it's many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered members) into the argument.

18. You really have to understand the mentality down here...
Year in and year out, Texas fans grouse about Florida (sometimes the whole state) being the usurper of what rightfully belongs to Texas; its Friday night lights, the Source of all football, pigskin epicenter, etc. But now they must come before the great and all-powerful Lizard and pay homage, all because Oklahoma is the opponent. I find that amusing as hell.

So will Keynes disappear from the economics section?

And Alan Turing from Computer Science?

and Walt Whitman from American Literature?

Sounds like they are going after a repeat of "entartete Kunst":

because of their obsession with all things gay. i don't think someone who is secure in his/her sexuality would care so much about what other people do.

I had actually been pretty pleased with the job Cornett had done in OKC...until now, that is.

Edit: Sadly, most folk I know here will strongly support this. Pathetic!
